ACC? Well that helps ISU attempt to get into the BIG if the Big 12 collapses right? or no?

I think this actually ensures the Big 12 remains intact. UCONN and Rutgers were the rumored 15th and 16th schools to move, and Villanova had applied for membership in the ACC. Saying that N.D. would move to the ACC for non-football sports (which means they would remain independent for football) should throw the other Big East schools into panic mode knowing that the membership number is shrinking. If UT/OU can get the Big 12 house cleaned up, the Big 12 becomes the likely landing spot for the Big East left-overs.

Talk of the Big 22 (Mtn-West/Conf USA merger) expanding to 24. Big 24 would extend from Hawaii to East Carolina...

MWC, CUSA discuss first super, duper conference - CBSSports.com

This makes a lot of sense, it's just the MWC and CUSA having a championship game to get the BCS birth they have earned over the ACC and Big East anyway, it's not like Hawaii would be playing East Carolina every year.

The winner of this game would deserve a BCS bid or an 8/16 team playoff spot. If they get a BCS bid and BYU is left out of the Big 12/Big East, they would join this too.

Interesting tidbit from Andy Katz on SportsCenter this morning. I haven't seen a link, but he said sources from ND had said they will pursue the ACC if they lose a place for their non-football sports (i.e., Big East collapses).

That is very interesting, apparently ND really likes playing along the east coast rather than stay in the midwest...

It would certainly move ISU up in the pecking order, but the only real question I have at this plot is what motivation would the B1G have to go to 16 if they no longer have a prospect of landing ND? I suppose the B1G could add Rutgers, ISU, KU, and MU out of spite, and is have no problems with that, but that's not a sound business decision for them - doing things out of spite, I mean.

This.

As far as Big Ten and ISU -- if the ACC were to take ND with UConn, it probably doesn't change ISU's prospects a whole lot. One would think that they'd rather take UConn than Rutgers. Rutgers has been mentioned more in connection with Big Ten.

Awful quiet this morning. Any follow up to the huge news last night? Having (BYU, WV, Lou, Cinci, and TCU) join the B12 to make a B14 would be awesome. I'm looking for some second sources or third or fourth, twits, fake Bebe, Beve haters, hell I'd even take what's his name from the Austin A-S. I just want to know this true and this crap is over.

Fake Beebe's cousin's uncle's mechanic's dog's best friend's nephew's brother-in-law just called me and gave me verification that this is in fact over. You have nothing to worry about. He also said to put money on Wyoming winning this week.

It really makes me sad to see ISU on that list of 6. It doesnt even seem possible that we have things in common with them but apparently I am far too close to the situation to seem objective.

I think we have to good of an academic profile and a big enough fan base where we stand out on that list. I think the chance of us finding a soft landing spot is much higher than us being on the outside looking in.

Keep positive

When I was lurking (creeping) on a ND message board, I was surprised by how many of their fans were against joining the B1G. They want to go somewhere where they have a better shot of recruiting nationally rather than stay in their own backyard.

You had me until the Wyoming bit ...

Makes very good sense for a national program like ND. They may be the only one that this would apply to.

I wonder if any big conference will actually go to 16 as long as ND remains independent.

I think sometimes you don't want to go with who has been courting you the whole time, the lust factor drops. It's like the new girl who showed up in school (or for some the freshmen girls). There is intrigue, excitement, thrill of the chase. For ND the big ten is the so-so girl you know you can hitch up with at anytime do they keep playing the field with the fall back plan.

Sometimes a group looks more desirable when hey say they are not allowing any new ones. Big ten has been a huge booty call partner for ND and ND probably won't go there unless they are forced to.

Why would ND want to go to B1G where they would be geographically confined to the midwest/rustbelt? Also they would have to compete with 3 schools that are just as popular as they are (see post #13007 for a link to number of fans per team). When, if the ACC would have them, they could still have a national footprint. Lets face it if they play in the ACC as it stands now that is all the east coast from Miami to BC (potentially Conn), plus if they keep their rivalry with USC that gets them exposure out west. ND is better off doing that. IMO ND lines up better with east coast schools than midwest schools, maybe that is because they have always been in the Big East (well as far back as I remember), but it seems more eastern than Midwestern to me.

Look, the collegiate thing to do is to "leave no man behind." If they don't, and it is exposed that this is just an exercise to maximize profits - money coming into the conferences and their member institutions - then this has nothing to do with amateur athletics any more. At that point, it by definition is a professional sports business and the non-profit exemption for BCS conferences really needs to go away.

If these conferences can't find room in their money-grubbing conferences for 6 schools, then I say blow it up with the nuclear option.

It's beyond interesting, funny and intriguing now. It's time to let the Dodds, Borens, Delaneys and Scotts know there will be consequences. What else do we have to lose?
