Capital City League

I'm not concerned about Clyburn at all. He's proven himself already at Utah by dominating out there. Sure, it's not the Big 12, but it's not community college either.

And always remember, this is the CCL. Royce may not ever score a basket if he's just down there working on certain aspects of his game. And all the guys love shooting 3's in the CCL, so I wouldn't worry about Booker liking the 3 ball too much. And a lot of the time, guys are going to look somewhat dis-interested. That's just what it is. It's hard to get up to play against inferior competition in a summer league. It's not like we're playing Kansas!

For what it's worth, I heard Royce told some members of the Basketball program that his goal last night was to get 17 and 10-- 17 assists and 10 rebounds. Thus his apparent disinterest in looking for his own offense.

He's a unique breed. It's hard to get a great read on what his "real" game will look like--but no doubt he is a BIG body that is very skilled.

What an odd goal. I'm not sure how I feel about our "best player" not wanting to score.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. He will be a guy that you can tell to go get you 10 rebounds in a night and he will do it. Than you could tell him that you need a bucket and he could do it. Very skilled guy for someone his size

I was impressed by the defensive intensity.

I went to the games last night as well and I they are really fun to watch with friends. Here is what my takes are of the players and other stuff of what went on at the league:

-Royce White is a big dude. I watch a lot of NBA ball, and he is one of the better big men that can pass.

-I was surprised by the attendence of the games. From reading the forums and watching YouTube, I felt there would be 40-50 people there, but the bleachers were practically full.

-A guy from NAICC named Kendal Brown (#41 for the blue team) was trying to charge his phone on an outlet right underneath the basket in the middle of the game it was the funniest thing ever.

-Jordan Railey was sitting apart from his teammates after the game, if thats important at all.

-Incoming freshman Aaron Law looked good, could be a nice player in 2-3 years, but needs a lot of work. Before the game during warmups, I was thinking Law was Kendall Brown, and I could not stop laughing. Anyone who watched Kendal Brown last night knows that that guy is a jokester.

-A no-show that I was interested in seeing was Adam Emmenecker. He must have been at Jethros

I've been going to these games regularly since the first year they had the league (about 7-8 years ago), and that was definitely the biggest crowd I've ever seen there.

My 2 cents. White handles the ball like a softball and can squeeze passes into small areas like we've never seen before. Point forward is a good description for his game last night. I love Babb's outside shot and leadership, he is silky smooth, and can also get to the hoop. Expect big contributions from him whether as a starter or sub. Allen didn't tear it up last night but he is a big time player and can easily play the point if needed. Scotty was Scotty, one of the very best shooters we've ever had at ISU who can also give you an assist and win games with his good instincts. McGee is strong outside and strong to the hoop, a great scorer. Also a real nice kid from talking to him a few minutes after his game. Booker is strong inside and can hit outside, a soild big man. Clyburn is more perimeter but also looks to be a very capable scorer. Ejim looks stronger but I hope he improves his outside shot and mid range jumper. But my favorite last night has to be Cory Lucious, and I don't care how small he is, though he looks close to 6 foot. He's lightning quick and a magician with the ball and a great outside shooter (he had 30 last night). He is going to provide a whole career's worth of entertainment for us in his one year of eligibility. And Fred made no mistake in offering Abrahamson. He more than held his own last night with 20 points and showed 3 point range to 25 feet. His game (and looks) reminds me of Pete Maravich with his great ball handling and spin moves to create shots, and as he gains size and strength there's no telling how good this kid could get. He's definitely a perimeter player.

DUBulldog, what did you think?

I want to get an outside perspective on some of these players in addition to how some of the Drake players looked.

Hmmm. No mention of Bubu by anyone. Did he play last night?

There were several comments about Law and most were good. I put Law and Bubu in the same category. Good players. Can they compete in the B12? Maybe, maybe not. For folks that don't remember, Bubu has played in the CCL for the last couple of years and has done VERY well. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I hope Law does the same. Frankly, I don't know that we need both Bubu and Law. If Law looks good I would suspect that Bubu might try his luck elsewhere.

Bubu played pretty well and had 16 points. The problem for him and Law is that the competition for playing time gets a lot tougher this year. If Sledge red-shirts, BuBu might get meaningful time on the court, otherwise I doubt it. I think Law should stick with football.

Huh? They are walk ons. Why would Law have any impact over Bubu? Neither are playing and neither are on scholarship so they don't affect each other at all.

I'll try to go into more detail later on (need get some work done today), but I was really impressed with White and Clyburn. White really surprised me with his passing...he didn't look to shoot much, which is extremely unusual for any player in the CCL, but I'm guessing he's a pretty capable scorer down low. I left before the 3rd game started (no Drake guys showed up for either team), so I can't comment on Lucius. I watched Booker play against Drake for two years when he was at SIU, and he was a guy who had all the tools, but never was able to put it together....I hope he can do that at ISU.

As for Drake guys.....hard to say....less than half of them showed up last night. For whatever reason, the Drake players (or maybe coaches?) don't consider the CCL to be something they need to participate in. Last season, only 1 Drake player showed up for more than half of his team's games, and that was a walk-on. The majority of DU players only played in 2-3 CCL games last summer, and it's looking like more of the same this year. Of the guys who did play, nobody really stood out. This will be Phelps' 4th year, and the fan base is growing very restless.

Law's not a football player. I think you are thinking of McBeth

Yes, you're right. I was thinking of McBeth, who wasn't bad last night but will be so deep on the bench with the new players that I thought he would go back to football.

I forgot McBeth was even playing in CCL. There was talk last year that McBeth was actually pretty good at hoops so his invite to the team was not a fluke. I think someone actually posted his HS stats and they were pretty good too. If I remember correctly they were better than Law's. Not saying he's better; just better stats. So that's 3 walkon guards. Yeah, they don't count as a scholie but how many do you need? Maybe McBeth will go back to football as you thought.

He was never going to see time on the football field either. He is a typical walk on. Walk on's don't play for good teams in D1.
