Report: Jim Tressel resigns

Re: Tressel resigns

This had to happen. it already would have at a lesser school. Personally, I think a deal was made to throw Tressel under the truck wheels to try to appease the NCAA.

The Buckeyextra article highlighted earlier in a cyclonefanatic post quoted from Gee's letter to the OSU Board of trustees. In this letter, Gee writes I and me 5 times and we, our and us 7 times. Signs of a narcissist at work.

"I write to let you know that later this morning we will be announcing the resignation of Jim Tressel as head coach of the University's football program. As you all know, I appointed a special committee to analyze and provide advice to me regarding issues attendant to our football program. In consultation with the senior leadership of the University and the senior leadership of the Board, I have been actively reviewing the matter and have accepted Coach Tressel's resignation.

"My public statement will include our common understanding that throughout all we do, we are One University with one set of standards and one overarching mission. The University's enduring public purposes and its tradition of excellence continue to guide our actions," Gee wrote.

Gee and Smith voiced unwavering support for Tressel.

There must be more dirt on the football team to come out now, just 2 months before the NCAA meeting in August. Gee and Smith look bad today. The NCAA allowed the five players to play in the Sugar Bowl. Tressel didn't inform Smith immediately for some reason. Smith said the legal bills are huge. Gee made a really stupid public statement about Tressel firing him. This is all bad handling of a bad situation. Stay tuned, there is more to follow. These two characters haven't shown the ability to manage an Athletic Department with the second highest budget among all colleges in the country. They aren't doing a good job covering up the mistakes.

CPR would have to have a very good year to even be a longshot for the job, and imo a good year provides more evidence that the right guy can win at ISU. Obviously it's important for any coach to know he can win at a school, and I think that would make CPR's ties to ISU even stronger. His family is here and improvements to the facilities are happening, and he's going to make a lot of money, so I don't think he's going anywhere at least in the near term. Who knows what penalties the new coach at OSU may have to work under, but they should be very severe considering what they did to USC.

Iowa Big 10 championships on the way!

Honest question: If this stuff happened to Ferentz, would you want him gone? What percentage of UofI fans would want him gone?

I only ask because I have yet to hear Hawk fans say anything negative about the issues Iowa has had lately. All my Hawk friends say the standardized "Not a big deal" when concerned with UofI football. Tressel was way more of an offender, but I honestly don't think this is out of the realm of possibilities for Ferentz and Co.

I would be sick if it happened at ISU and would want the black eye out of the picture. That being said, if we had 13 players hospitalized I would flip the **** out and demand answers from the people in charge. The sicknesses, moreso than the arrests for alcohol etc., would get under my skin.

This is not meant to be a jab at Iowa, just would like to know how you would feel if these allegations hit closer to home.

Maybe two people wrote the letter.

As much as I hate Iowa, there is no way Ferentz is even close to as bad as Tresell in violations. There is no evidence, unfortunately, of Ferentz ever having any major violations and the most you can say about him is questionable discipline of his players after getting in trouble with the law.

That being said, am I the only one who thinks that Ferentz would be a candidate for the OSU job? The play styles are pretty similar and he has a pretty good track record.

Biggest loser out of this whole thing,Tressel's look-a-like fan. He will for ever get dirty looks and will no longer be able to get into the games free with a "running late, gotta go coach the team."

My biggest question: what did Gene Smith know? Also, you have to imagine this assistant they promoted knew something; it'd be kind of hard not to.

Since tOSU is keeping a year long interim coach, any bets on what happens first - tOSU gets a new head coach or Tressel gets rehired somewhere else?

With a winning percentage like he has I'm sure several schools would jump all over the chance of bringing him in despite his violations.

No doubt Tressel is worse than Ferentz. Iowa has had some question marks around their program, OSU has some exclamation points. I'm just saying that if the same thing happened to Iowa I wouldn't be the least bit suprised. Honestly, if you found out that DJK or Claybourne had been driving brand new cars and Ferentz turned a blind eye, would you think "No way, not at Iowa"? From my own personal experience with extreme Hawk fans, there would be a ton of "Yeah, buts" and "Who cares" going around. I wonder just how many would grab their pitchforks and torches to run him out of town.
I think the same could be said of any school with a good program. It is far easier to overlook something like this when you are winning. How would UofI fans feel about the arrests and hospitalizations if they were 7-5 every year?

And, yes, I think Ferentz will get a serious look at the OSU job. He is a BigTen coach to the core and would be a good fit, IMO.
