***Official Minnesota Vikings Draft Pick Discussion Thread***

I can't fault this pick. They wanted to trade down but obviously didn't have any takers to move up. Ponder wasn't going to be there when they picked again so if they wanted him they were going to have to pick him there.

Why do you think they will be good?
I didn't say that I thought they would be. Besides, I asked you first. You made a statement that they wouldn't be, and I asked you why you thought that. So either answer the question, or stop being a jack***. Your choice.

Well, either that, or put the beer down and step away from the computer.

I just don't think they'll be good. Didn't realize I needed to specify why.

That's what I think happened, too. They saw Washington waiting at 16, and thought they would be taking Ponder. From what I understand, the Vikes really like Ponder for their system. If they end up with a nice value at OT or DE in the second round, I'll be fine with things, despite the way it went down.

take it to PM guys. Nobody wants to see you tickle fight over semantics.

I agree with you. Ponder did nothing but never live up to the hype and potential at Florida State, where as Locker has shown very little in the passing game. He is also cocky and thinks very highly of himself.

Hey, leave me out of this tickle fight. I just came in here and said I don't think they will be good. They were the jackasses that attacked me.

ok, you made your point, then. You think he sucks.

Only team on espn to get below a C grade of the 1st round and it was a big fat F. Any other qb besides injury prone weak armed Ponder. Chad Pennington is a qb like this, how has he worked out.

The writers at Bleacher Report wrote that if the Vikes took a QB in the 1st, that Ponder would be the one taken since they felt he'd be the best fit overall, and it looks like they were right. Unfortunately, Ponder won't make an immediate impact, so they'll have to sign a veteran free agent to fill the position until Ponder develops. Anyway, there's no QB, veteran or rookie, that's going to take the Vikes to the Super Bowl this year as there are too many holes to fill, particularly at DT, OL (C & G), OLB, DB, and if Rice leaves, WR. Getting the Vikes back to championship level is a rebuilding job for the next two to four years. The Vikes may get to the playoffs, but they won't get very deep at all this year. Unlike what CW says, the Vikes are not built to win this year. I write this as a diehard Vikings fan since 1969, so it's painful to me, but it's the truth. Sorry Chris.

Pete Prisco of CBS gave them an "A" for the pick. Here are his comments:
I love this pick. I think he will be the best in this class. Smart. Tough. Sees the field. Great move, Vikings.

I don't really care that they took Ponder even though I liked him least of the QBs. Their judgement is probably better than mine.

I'm ****** that they took a guy that wasn't going until at least pick 25ish at 12. They could've taken Fairly, Quinn, or Prince and really really improved the team and then tried to trade into the end of the first to get Ponder. Or they could have traded down if they had any takers. Just poor management of the value of their draft picks

The thing is, he fits their offense better than any of the other QB's that were available at the time, and sitting at 16 are the Redskins, who the Vikings thought were waiting on Ponder, whom they liked a lot as well. So, unless Detroit, St. Louis or Miami wanted to trade, the Vikings would have been risking the losing the guy they wanted by trading down. I wish they could have waited to get him, but Paul Allen says he was the guy they wanted, and they wanted to be sure they got him. I've made my peace with the pick, especially if they go out and grab a DE or OT with the 43rd pick.
