Coach has to be able to recruit the right talent and keep them around.
What does it say about the state of our program that McDermott can't keep these guys around?
I think many fans excuse our program because guys have left and McDermott hasn't had enough time with them to instill his system. All the while we've glossed over the fact that it's McDermott's responsibility to build his team, when players leave it's ultimately on his ability to lead, not their lack of whatever (for leaving).
I've allowed some passes the first couple years. This year is his team and his recruits.
1. He's had time to get guys in place with experience.
2. The players should know the system and offense.
I'm not going to call for his head yet. Lots of season left. Although I don't like the trend and I also realize he's probably around at least another year regardless of this year's outcome.
Ill give you Gilstrap for sure, sorry was lost in anger. Gilstrap has been the bright spot this year.
Just realizing this now....Last season should've been an eye opener.....like ive said in past threads...This is a sinking ship...throw the dead weight overboard...:no:
And kansas did not play that well today. it could have bneen a 35 point loss. Our guards usually end up a negative when matched against the other side. We continue to pass to the oputer limits each game. We throw balls over peoples head, we throw it at rim for dunk when our players are guarded, we bounce the ball off shoes, butts, faces, hands left and right. We are not crisp in handling the ball.
Dendy need to take more time in shooting free throws. He needs to change his approach. When you shoot 1 for 6, you might as well bank it in. He was short on three attempts that never reached.
The good news is this is all correctable. basically we are beating ourselves on offense. We need to watch the tape of the first two Big 12 games.
Can JVB still come back this year? CB needs the help to get open.

McD is not the answer, being soft, wrong conference for his coaching style, wont yell or be aggressive with his players because he may hurt there feelings.
Simple...new coach new style, and get one from the Big12,(or even Ugh Big10) who know how the Big12 plays adn knows the conference. Till then....ISU will just be the door mat of the Big12. I see absolutely nothing positive.....except knowing at home I can turn the channel. When ISU gets off their butts and realizes that this is a sport that produces revenues, then maybe just maybe they will realize that change needs to be made before it gets worse.
If this keeps up, Iowa will have a better record than ISU - And I know that we as fans will not like that.
All you who bashed me a month or more ago, I am glad that you now see what I was talking about. I wish the kids the best and most of all, I pray ISU gets the basketball program rolling to where it should be at....like where the women's is at.

and that is what bothers me so much about the guy. He is turning into the Shaq of ISU basketball. Teams will hack him when he touches the ball because he can not make free throws, and that is starting to occur more often. I have loved Dendy most the year, but his free throw shooting is catching up with him. Also, Dendy has played decent defense all year, but today he was getting beat by Aldrich pretty bad, and you could tell he was getting fatigued quite bad. ISU really needed him to step up big with Hamilton in foul trouble, and he couldn't quite do it. He seemed to be more of a liability on the both ends of the floor than he helped, but with depth, not sure what other options ISU had.
Alright, I've been good about not commenting on the GMac tenure as I wasn't convinced he was the right guy to coach this team from the beginning & knew full well my input would be severely biased but given the fact that we're 3.5 years in, I felt I could finally throw in my 2-cents.
There have been players leaving the program since day one & I can understand that in the very beginning/first year....but at some point (as many others have pointed out), it has to fall fully on the shoulders of the head coach - this is his responsibility & if, for a minute, anyone wants to throw him a pity party every time a player exits the program, I say BS, he is ultimately the one in charge of creating a cohesive chemistry & establishing a winning environment & attitude, which I have seen nothing of the sort, period! STRIKE 1
There has been the talk of Coach GMac needing to get his players & system in place & it takes time, just give him a little more time....
I give you Mike Anderson @ Missouri, Rick Majerus @ St. Louis, Mike Montgomery @ Cal, Johnny Dawkins @ Stanford, Lon Kruger @ UNLV, Frank Martin @ K. State, Leonard Hamilton @ Florida State, Scott Drew @ Baylor, Ernie Kent @ Oregon - to name just a few off the top of my head! If you are curious to know, most every one of these guys has been at their respective programs for only a few years (save, Ernie Kent & Leonard Hamilton) but have found great success quickly, taken their teams to post season play, produced winning records & gotten their 'signature win.' None of which GMac has been able to produce yet. STRIKE 2
These coaches, by and large, had things going at 'non power' schools w/in the first three years or so....why not in Ames?
Then comes the theory of how he was so successful at UNI....I agree, he did more w/less talent there, not exactly sure how he accomplished this but I would venture to guess there are at least two simple reasons for it. 1 - all the players who wound up on his Panther teams were hard working, mostly disciplined, high basketball knowledge kids who were 'chip on the should' guys w/something to prove to all the DI programs who overlooked them 2 - Ben Jacobsen, pretty sure this could be best compared to the Dan Hawkins/Chris Peterson situation at Boise State & we all see how that has worked out & who might really have been the secret to a majority of the success! FOUL TIPPED
I've exhausted enough time & energy on this as I know the season isn't over and as a State fan, optimism HAS to remain very high at all times but something must change before the season ends to instill any sort of confidence in this staff that should justify retention.
Unfortunately, I (as well as most of the rest of us) realize nothing will likely happen coaching wise for the next year or two.

I blamed them for the first 3 years, but McDermott is doing nothing to make it better. He is has mended the sinking ship just enough to keep it afloat, but it isn't going anywhere.
