Parrish: What if Johnson would've never left

Reading articles like that are really painful but I doubt we would have Gilstrap on this team if WJ was still here.

Just think if Craig Brackins was never born... Who would we have to replace him? and where would we be now?!?!

Couple tweets from last night:

ESPNAndyKatz Jim Boeheim didn't hesitate to promote Wesley Johnson as a lottery pick . He's likely one-and-done at SU. He's 5years removed from HS.

ebosshoops Funny to see everybody jockin Wes Johnson. He was a stud @Iowa State.

yeah I suppose it is a consolation that he beat UNC and that ISU gets some national attention. But really I just try not to think about it, losing Wes was probably the biggest blow to the McDermott era.

If Johnson had stayed and enjoyed a breakout year last season, I doubt if he would have been around this year. He may or may not have been ready for the draft, but his "handlers" would have almost certainly pushed him in that direction.

We all knew what we lost when he transferred. If he had played for us last year, he'd already be a household name (or possibly in the NBA already). Can't argue with the press he'll get at Syracuse though.

Tough to swallow it, but I like our team. I don't want WJ if he can't handle a little coaching anyways.

Think about this:

If WJ stayed an ISU made the tourney last year....maybe Craig is gone. He said he came back to accomplish more here.

I can't decide if I'm sick of the "iowa state transfer" tag that seems to be mandatory at every WJ reference. On second thought, its kind of funny that Iowa State is going to be mentioned all season long - if we can get some big wins this year then we'll be in the national conversation double the amount.

Do you read the posts on this site? Some of us know but there appears to be a decent portion of those on this site that believe we are better off without him.

This is clearly water under the bridge but what always baffled me is why so many on this site put 100% of the blame for his departure on WJ and totally exonerated GM in the matter.

I hate the what if game...

There's so many what if's... What if Wes Johnson was a crappy D1 basketball player?
What if Wes Johnson only grew to be 5'11"?
What if Wes Johnson never signed with Iowa State in the first place?

No... as the National Media... let's pick one that rubs a sore spot on a fan base and discuss that instead. It doesn't matter... every one of the "what if's" doesn't matter... because they are "didn't happens".

How about every team that wanted Wes Johnson after he transferred. What if he went to Team XYZ? Sucks for them that he didn't.

Pretty tough to make an argument that we're better off without him. That, I believe, would be sour grapes talking.

Wesley was a no name recruit that no one wanted. McD took a chance on Johnson and he used us as a stepping stone.

Just like greedy Harrison Jordan Barnes and his greedy mother, I hope they are thinking about what they have done to GMAC right now......and I hope Roy Williams has a stroke!

Thats harsh. Business is business as ****** as it is. But thats a bit much.

? Others stayed and are improving. Not sure how GM is the issue?

If it was GM's fault WJ left, then I'm sure Brackins would have left last year as well. Not only did that say a lot about Brackins as a Cyclone, but also showed that GM is running the right program and treating his players well. If GM is so mean and nasty and doesn't care about his players, then Brackins probably would have left for the NBA to make millions.

EDIT: add Lucca to that list as well.

He also admitted changing his coaching style and player relations after Wes left...
