07-08 Basketball Roster

FYI...I'm a hockey expert talking basketball...

I'm not worried at all. McDermott took UNI to 3 NCAA tournaments and ISU went to 0.....give him a couple years to do his thing and we will be set...I'm psyched about the future of ISU BB....

Please forgive me if my facts are wrong but I know they are something close to what was written. I thought about looking them up but it is one in the morning here and I have to teach in the morning. I am tired and need some rest. God Speed...

That is absolutely rediculous regarding the guards. Mike Taylor was not a Division III caliber player. Neither were Dodie Dunson or McInstosh for that matter. A division III caliber player will not get Honorable Mention all Big 12. They all had their flaws, and I firmly believe that the incoming freshmen will be better than what we had last year eventually, to think they'll be better this year is taking a massive leap. Our frontcourt should be stronger. Maybe we'll be better overall, but I doubt it. I am looking forward to watching these guys develop. But to think that the team will be better off without Taylor, McInstosh and Dunson(maybe) is just plain idiotic.

Garrett was fairly highly ranked, so he has the potential to be very good. I would imagine he'll be up and down throughout the season. The other three guys are no more highly regarded than Dodie Dunson was. Do you think we'd have been better last season with 4 Dodie Dunson's in the backcourt? It may have provided us better hope for the future, but we would not have been a better team this season.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Why does everyone get so damn offensive when someone says something they don't agree with and call their comments idiotic? I guess I didn't realize there were smart predictions and idiotic predictions.

Bad choice of words. Predictions are predictions and we can just disagree. There is certainly no conclusinve evidence that we won't be better, so I apologize for criticizing that prediction.

I will criticize the Division III comment. Calling the guards Division III talent is not a prediction. Taylor is not a Division III talent and to say so is just, shall I say, silly.

If Mac dismisses him....great. More time to develop the younger players, fewer turnovers etc. Personally, I won't miss his court presence, and yes I know he was our primary O threat. It will allow: the freshman to develop, WJ to become a leader, TEAM basketball, and finally, McD to integrate the type of system he wants. Sorry, I just think McD had to fill a roster last year and Mike's skills helped get us through the year.

Everyone is forgetting Rahshon Clark...I dont seem to hear his name come up too often.

I would say three of the 5 starters are going to be

Rahshon Clark
Wesley Johnson
Jiri Hubalek

WHo are the other two??

Seniors (when recruited)
Jiri Hubalek 3 star
Rahshon Clark 4 star
Mike Talyor - pending 3 star

Juniors
Alex Thompson 3 star

Sophs
Wesley Johnson 2 star
Cory Johnson 3 star

Freshmen
Diante Garrett 3 star
Marcus Brister 3 star
Charles Boozer 2 star
Clayton Vette 2 star
Craig Brackins 5 star
Lucca Staiger 3 star

no real point to this thread, just a discussion starter

I really appreciate you putting this together. I'm surprised with all the hype on Vette that he was only a 2 star. I am caring less and less about stars though anymore. Seems like half aren't good representations of the player.

I too think the '08-'09 season is looking bright. Brister and Garrett will be good guards but to expect them to come in and lead the team as freshmen is a bit unreasonable. When's the last time ISU has had a true freshmen back court and made any sort of noise? I honestly don't know so I'm asking the question out of curiosity.

Well we had Stinson and Blalock in the backcourt a couple years ago. I'm not sure what our final record was, but that was the last time we had 2 frosh back there.

Good point. I'd forgotten about that. Was that the year we went deep in the NIT?

Yes, they were freshmen that year (2004). I think Vroman and Sullivan were seniors that year and did a great job. That was an example of Wayne's teams maybe overachieving (for him), but that's because Vroman and Sullivan didn't have the pleasure of starting at ISU being "coached" by him. Vroman and Sully didn't take plays off.

Let's be real. Next year we are going to suck. Things will get better though.

I don't buy that at all. We should be around 18-20 wins. There is no reason why we shouldn't be competitive in almost every game. Our front court is solid. Jiri, Wes, Clark and Thompson will make us a very good rebounding team. We should continue to see improvement on defense also. The Freshman are an upgrade in talent from who is leaving but there is no reason why this team should be worse than last year. 7-9 in B12 is what I am expecting/hoping.

Next years group of frosh will make or break ISU basketball for the next 5 years. We need Brackins to be as good as advertised and we need Garrett or somebody to step up and be a great guard with Wes already controlling the midrange. You need that dominant guard/post combo ala Cato/Willoubhy(sp), Fizer/Tinsley, and even Homan/Stinson

Next 5 years? Don't forget that Cato, Willoughby and Tinsley were all JUCOs. A basketball program can change quickly.

We do need Brackins to be as good as advertised, but lets not forget Garrett is a top 150 player and would be higher barring a freak injury in high school. So i am really excited to see him. Brister and Staiger also look like solid players, who don't really need to bulk up to get big 12 bodies, they have to contribute right away for ISU to be successful. Vette also has a Big 12 body, hopefully he can come in and get time with AT, Jiri, and Brackins in the post. Boozer is a question mark to me as i know the least about him. There is potential for all of our freshman, but to exect us to be a NCAA tourney team next year is a strech!

Why does everyone think AT will play center...he is much smaller in size than Jiri. HE also is shorter. He played F his whole career at the highschoolwe both went to.

We're replacing three Division III caliber guards here. Not too hard to do fellas. And you can't tell me that our frontcourt isn't 180% stronger for next year. I think we will be the team to beat in the state. Which could give us 3 wins right there.

I agree that we'll be the best team in the state. But that might not mean all that much. Overall, I heartily agree that we are on the way up and am unconcerend about the lost players.

Basketball is a sport where talented freshman can make an immedaite impact. And while I am sometime guilty of reading the press clippings, I think we actually have a talented call coming in for next season. We will be dramatically improved down low, and that counts for a lot. Imagine what it will be like to thrown the ball inside and have people actually have to guard and double team people. Last year was the low point for the program. The future looks very birght.
