I legit forgot the difference between he man and thundercats, I think I was more of a thundercats kid, mum-ra was creepy for a kids cartoon, I loved it.
I am not but it's a nostalgia thing if you grew up with it. I will watch it now on streaming.
Did he just call us butt worms?
I enjoyed the movie. Had some good laughs. I really liked the cartoon, cartoon movie, and Dolph movie as a kid though. The recent wave of nostalgia movies tailored at my generation has been fun. I also didnt expect it to be an award contender. It had some heart, fun action scenes, etc. I even thought Leto did a good job. I get the gripes, its gonna be a miss for a lot of folks, but overall I enjoyed it. Yes, Im still in love with Teela. SO WHAT.

I had low expectations and loved it. It is made for people like me though, dads in their 40's that grew up with the toys/cartoon and now have kids to share it with. My 7 and 5 year old boys liked it too.
We just watched it the other night. Like you, I was more of a Thundercats kid growing up. They're basically the same show with different character names. Both have a sword that gives them power.

I couldn't tell what they were going for. Felt like they were going slightly red pill by making fun of his human resources job and the tropes involved with office life these days. Then the ambiguous gay jokes and how weird they make skeletor(somehow the best part of the movie). I just did not get it. The action was ok but took half the movie to get there.

It wasn't for you, and that's ok. Not everything has to be for everyone.
If you have no connection to the original series or even any of the reboots/revivals/ancillary materials, there would have been too much that you didn't know to truly catch all the humor or how they simultaneously paid homage to the franchise while playfully prodding at the ridiculousness of it. And the original Skeletor was always weird. Later versions adding depth to make him a more tragic figure, but the OG was literally just a proverbial mustache twirling villain with ridiculous plots that always failed. It's just how 80's cartoons were.
Ya I understand all that. I was born in 84. Just didn't hit with me I suppose. Campy movies aren't usually good to me. Starship Troopers being a big outlier.
To me this movie was trying to be too serious to come off as campy like say Space Balls for comparison.
It was fun, with the caveats that I caught it on streaming and watched it while I was doing some boring work at home. They knew the tone they should go for, and how serious to take it.
I think streaming will be big for it. The nod at the credits to She-Ra was cool. Hope it gets a sequel.
Starship Troopers is satire. Spaceballs is parody. This was cheesy 80's nostalgia with a bit of a modern lens twisting.
That movie was intended for guys like me, mid 40s to early 50s who were fans of the toys and cartoon. I know it bombed at the theatre but I suspect that the only people who saw it were single guys in the that age bracket and any kids too young to protest that got drug along with Dad to see it. That's not a super massive audience. I imagine the rest of you married guys had a conversation with the wife about like I had where when I asked her to go the response landed somewhere between hell no and a laughing no.
I watched it on Prime the other night and it hit all the right nostalgia points with me. Jared Leto was a good Skeletor who is supposed to be a bit over the top. They did miss an opportunity to call Randor a Royal Boob which was disappointing. Like if you went in expecting a Game of Thrones fantasy then I would expect you left it wondering what the hell was that. If you were a fan of the show as a kid then you probably enjoyed it.

I mean, it's not the best movie I've ever seen, but I had fun watching it in the theater with my wife. Pretty simple plot, buncha dumb jokes, good casting I thought. I didn't go in expecting Citizen Kane, and no one should really. I'm on a big nostalgia kick right now, so it scratched that itch. I'm glad it didn't take itself too seriously.
But that's the thing, so many cartoons from the 80s and probably 90s had simple plots and were pretty cheesy, so I'm glad that's what it was. It was nice to watch something fun again. There are so many things popular today that are dark and weird or super serious. Which is fine. I just needed something lighthearted. I hope they make a She-Ra movie or she's in the sequel, but I doubt it gets made.
Going to watch in on Prime with my boys tonight. Have very low expectations, so hoping to enjoy the nostalgic ride.
