That was awesome. And yes, don’t listen to KXNO/iheart anymore
It would be nice if there was a central list of advertisers on KXNO still advertising after the layoffs. I’d love to know who to boycott, and who to encourage others to boycott. Not that it will change anything, but might as well hit iHeart in the only place it cares about- its pocket book.

I suspect advertisers buy their spots on a monthly or quarterly basis. So wait until 7/1 to make that decision. But I hear you.

Fales bit was great. Didn't hold back on what he thought of iHeart and dropped some truth bombs. Honestly I'll be a bit surprised if Condon's show airs again on KXNO if he did get suspended for what happened Wednesday. Just because he buys his air time doesn't mean he can say whatever he wants. Even if he does get back on air I would guess he's already been shopping around for a new place to land after what happened. Probably a lot easier to get advertisers when your show is bookend by 2 other local shows. The drive time shows are where the ratings and advertisement dollars are best spent as people want to listen to something local to and from their commute to work. I did not make a point to listen to Miller and Condon because I'm too consumed with work during the day to listen to anything and unless I heard that there was something good on their show that day I didn't listen to the podcast either.

The morning and afternoon shows were convenient because I could just turn on KXNO when I got in the car and if I wasn't interested in the topics I would just change to something else. Even crappy local sports talk is still better the national shows that will be aired instead as there is not an appetite for all the pro sports talk on those shows since we do not have a pro team in the state.

One other thing I thought about yesterday too and this may be a good podcast topic for @ChrisMWilliams to dive into some day on one of his podcasts... What kind of enrollment trends are ISU and other journalism schools seeing these days with the death of print media and the downsizing of local media talent? Newspaper is pretty much dead now and even the DMR outsources a lot of their online stuff to a national media companies like USA Today. Same with radio and TV. You are seeing a lot of long time TV personalities step away from TV for various reasons and both TV and radio newsrooms are not what they used to be for staffing due to being able to outsource and even seeing AI coming into play in the industry as well. Technology is playing a big part in that because instead of sending someone to be on location you just contract another personality in the area to do your on-site for you.

Journalism was already a tough market to break into and those who did make it put in a lot of hours for little pay and thanks to get there along the way. With all the challenges facing a college grad now compared to what it was like 20+ years ago just how much interest is there for someone to pursue a journalism degree these days? I graduated ISU in 2002 and knew someone that graduated around the same time and worked for WHOTV 13 for a bit with the title of Producer. They said the pay sucked, the hours were long and that was back before things were all digital so the title of Producer was basically being the "tape monkey" that had to queue up tape for the stories and sometimes they did not even know what the lead story would be until 15 minutes before going on air. You hear the radio host acknowledge who their producer is and in reality that person usually is the one that works the hardest for the lowest pay.

I don’t know what the enrollment figures are at Greenlee. Actually I have an opposite take being a JLMC grad.. this is a very tough market for mid size papers. Radio is toast. But weekly’s are holding their own because of legals and loyalty. I think there is still a good niche for grads just starting out. Look for areas with lots o mennonites and Amish. Start their own paper.

Agreed. She barely knew anything about what happened the night before. The one thing I adored about CW on the radio was his ability to speak about every game and every team as though he at least had heard of them and knew a bit about them.

Hell she wouldn’t have even known Giannis got traded this morning.
That first attempt at layoffs was the best thing that could have happened for us, Iowa Everywhere is awesome. If you can't find 5 pods better than anything you were listening to on KXNO then I worry about you.

What do you listen to while driving?

I love my Lithium, Octane and Turbo channels
Do you drive a lot? I couldn't imagine paying to listen to anything. My wife always has Spotify bluetooth when she's in the car but for me I can just switch between 6 regular radio stations. 92.3, 101.1, 103.3, 106.7, 104.1, 102.5. Order of choice actually how I listed them.

This is one of those times that math makes me cry...

10 year old me in 1984 driving around with my parents listening to 30 year old "oldies" station from the 50's
10 year olds today driving around with their parents listening to 30 year old "oldies" artists Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, and Nirvana.......
Green Day me at 6 years old with my older neighbor boys blasting it = me now and my young kids trying to interpret every song lyric they hear.
