Anyone Know What's Happening to My Grass?

Happens most commonly in the spring, and often after periods of heavy rain when the grass is growing fast and it’s hard to keep up with cutting it the proper height. Completely normal.

Need to slowly lower your grass height. And as others have said, your blades need sharpening.

A lot of old timers say it iis good to let your bluegrass head out (start growing seed) in the spring even though you don't let the seeds develop. Probably responding to a better fertilization program.

My backyard just did the same thing after Friday night's rain, which it needed bad as I haven't watered it.

Happened to mine too after all these rains. Looks like more rain this evening so I'll have to mow mid-day...the joys of working from home.

Thanks all for the info, appreciate it. Dull blade thing is irritating because I had Van Wall service my mower last fall.

(you paid Van Wall to service) doesn't mean they did... some dbag with a hawk hat on.. stickers on his yellow and black custom painted x500. I would have done the same :jimlad:

Not defending Van Wall, but did the service agreement include sharpening the blade or only cover engine/belts other mechanical parts and lubrication?
I have two 54" deck 3 blade JD mowers and never intend on sharpened or new blades for the first mowing of the season. Our snowplow operator is notorious for flinging gravel into the mowed areas along with the snow and trying to get it all removed prior to mowing isn't always 100%. I also mow under 50+ trees in the back yard where picking up sticks doesn't always happen and many times anything less than 1/2 inch goes through the mower until I have time (or ambition) to clean it up better--a daunting task after high winds at times.
I have become quite proficient at sharpening my own blades when necessary and agree that "butterknife" sharp cut better for longer than "razor" sharp. For the amount/conditions I mow probably not many make blades last longer than here--but some of that may be attributed to the quality of JD OEM blades.

Pretty sure it included it but good question.

Pretty easy to sharpen your own blades if you feel inclined. I bought my sharpening kit from Menard's and haven't had an issue with it. All you need is a drill for the sharpening tool and a ratchet to pop the blade off.

My yard is having its weirdest start to the summer in years, haven't changed anything but have random dead spots that I haven't had before. Not sure if that is common for everyone based on conditions this winter or if I got behind on something.

Happening here too. It’s been very dry in Cedar Falls (up to the last couple days). I’m hopeful this rain will get it to come back. But my grass is very spotty and kinda thin in areas that are still growing.

Me too. Lived here 15+ years and never had bare spots on the front like I do this year. Have spent the past few weekends tilling them up, mixing in some fresh top soil and seeding. We'll see.
