The thing that I thought was odd was the article relying on Rocco for much of the story! I would prefer to read comments made by more of the people he didn't know until accepting that job. I mean...sure they aren't going to be critical but has Rocco ever made a negative/controversial remark? Just who he is but that guy is the eternal optimist!Latest ESPN article will have you throwing up in your mouth
The off-season coach profile puff pieces aren't meant to be critical. It's PR parading as journalism. No one on the staff or team was going to say anything bad about the new coach, and even if they did, the author was never going to include those quotes. The thing that I thought was odd was the article relying on Rocco for much of the story! Surprising that two plum jobs came open in the same year, both from the B10 and both with money and a built in recruiting advantage. If he hadn't gotten Penn State, he would have gotten Michigan.
ESPN had a Matt Campbell article as the main story on their websitewhats the TLDR version of why this thread came back to life?
Dumbing wars are dumb. I stop at 500 dumbed posts, I don’t have the time for more than that.He and i had a dumbing war at one point. i actually thoroughly enjoyed it, until i realized that i cant compete with him, as i have a job and a life
Matt Campbell will compete for National Championships at Penn State in the next 5 years.Agree. But the expectation is that Campbell wins the NC with these unlimited resources. Tall order for a program who hasn’t won it in over 40 years.
You’re assuming Campbell will have a better record in the ‘big games’. We’ll see. That’s disingenuous
They have title expectations, but they also gave Franklin 12 years. And if not for a horrible record in big games, he’d still be there despite no title

Campbell is a great coach but to be at the level some are expecting, he will have to change a lot about how he runs a program. To compete in the CFP you have to use the portal. That isn't exactly how he likes to build his program. He needs buy in and control, that's tougher when you're bringing in hired guns every year. He'll have pressure to be a big player in that market. The type of high school kids he'll be bringing in won't be the kind to sit around and wait their turn, it's going to be a totally different situation for him and his staff. Can his ego handle being forced to change?

The article stated Franklin was 1-18 verses top 10 schools while at PSU, that is a pretty low bar to get over for Campbell. My question is he going to be more willing to open up the playbook now that his team is going to be more talented in most of their games then the opponent. Be more like Cignetti and just put the wood to some teams. You’re assuming Campbell will have a better record in the ‘big games’. We’ll see.

They gave Franklin 12 seasons, three of which they were 7-6, there is no reason that PSU will give Campbell any less than a decade unless he completely bombs and he is too good a coach for that to happen. He will be fired within the next 5 years
