Revisionist history of the 07-08 ISU basketball season

Hearing the stories of Harrison Barnes and his college announcement got me thinking of what would have happened if the 07-08 season doesn't end 14-18 with 3 future NBA guys. If we somehow make the tournament and things are looking up, Wes Johnson stays and recruits his buddy Jimmy Butler to follow him to Iowa State that could start a domino effect for Iowa State basketball. The next three years could be something special

08-09:
Garret
Stiager/Petersen/Butler - follows Wesley here
Johnson - doesn't transfer
Brackins
Vanderbeken/Hamilton

09-10:
Garret
Butler
Johnson
Brackins
Hamilton - doesn't transfer

10-11:
Garret
Butler
McDermott - McDermott stays and his son follows
Harrison - the last two years of ISU basketball have been something special and he decides to stay home

Would 09-10 or 10-11 be better?? You get Brackins with Johnson and Butler but Harrison with a McDermott, Butler, and senior Garret would be amazing.

The McDermott teams had some talent, but they underachieved badly. Those teams had multiple NBA guys and couldn't finish with a winning record. Didn't even make an NIT. The 09-10 team should have won way more games than they did.

I do wonder if TJ learned a hard lesson in team-building from those McDermott years. It isn't about getting the most talented players, getting the right players and right fit is just as important.
 
I don't recall how good Thigpen was as a freshman, but i often think "what if" Sam Mack is on that 89-90 team with Victor, Woods, Collins, Thigpen, Doerf, and others.

Given the success of both ISU and McDermott before and after McDs ISU tenure makes the failure of that tenures pretty amazing.

Not a good fit doesn’t begin to describe the shocking incompetence of that era that couldn’t sniff a tourney in a program where Wayne Morgan won a tourney game and Prohm went to a sweet 16.

The real story is if potential ISU alum uncle Charles would have steered the Boozer twins here last year?

Oh boy. Do I wanna watch that game again? Part of me, yes, part of me, no. The 'no' part has won out all these years.

An old friend use to always say, "Close only matters in horse shoes and hand grenades".

I suppose he was right.
