Well considering I live here, I have. And I'm not saying it's some random podunk town, but the population drops dramatically once the spring semester ends and there are just less people in town.

Going back to CyTown, my concern is the ROI. There's a lot of money going into the project and other than football and maybe basketball weekends, it's hard for me to see the place being packed on a random evening in June.
Totally depends on what types of businesses they can get to move into the space. It very well may become the hot place to go down and get a few drinks and some food to eat. Problem will be that will put more of a stress on the existing places to eat in town.

Please define the “I” in your ROI concern…

Exactly. Whose investment are they concerned about the return on? The developer? The businesses that eventually commit to leases? The people/businesses that decide to lease the suites?

And does everyone forget that a massive new health clinic is going to be operating there daily? Any idea how much traffic that will bring to the area daily? Hint: a lot. Even in the summer.

The key to avoid being misled by facebook/Twitter morons is to inform yourself with facts. Iowa State invested $30M, developer is investing $185M. Iowa State needed to invest money to fix the parking lots anyways so there’s not much risk for ISU.

You gave them the answer. I was really looking forward to a creative & detailed response about how fiscally irresponsible Jamie is…

I'm pretty confident that there's a lot of misinformed people out there who are mad about this project because they were convinced it would be a literal copy of KC Live in the Power and Light District in KC with nothing but bars and restaurants, and then when the renderings came out, they thought they were lied to the whole time and it was all Pollards fault.
Despite the fact that Title Town in Green Bay was always the comp used.

100%

Just my experience, but my daughters played 4 years of high school softball in Chicago area (mostly large schools). I attended almost every game in those 4 years, and not once did I have to pay admission for regular season. Only exception was playoffs, and that was because the state association requires admission fees.
That really surprises me in a big metro like that, but good for you!

I've always wondered if that's what got the idea going. Those lots were crumbling, makes you wonder if someone went "if we're going to have to spend this much, how can we make that benefit us somehow"

That was used but there were definitely those hyping it up as something like p&l as well when first released to donors. "Pollard and light district" didn't come from nowhere.
Only place I’ve seen it is here. As usual, fans are victims of unofficial hype; often of their own making.

Well, if you’re a Cyclone fan wanting to cheer on ISU softball a week from now in Iowa City, you’re paying Iowa $10 to get in. Kinda the going rate.
But we let Hawk fans in free in Ames. Such welcoming hosts!
We can do what Drake does charge like hell for rivalry games then leave the rest free.
Few yrs back the ISU Drake tkt was like 25 or 33% of Drake season tkts.

Probably not unless there is a concert that will net more than $1 million for the AD.

The hotel alone is going to do just fine as Ames could use another option. Especially with the location it will be sold out for any big events in Ames. During the school year it's a convenient option for anyone visiting a student and when school is out probably be a prime location for conventions.

Football, basketball, and any other big events like concerts and such are going to bring in some big business even if they are for short periods of time. The goal will be getting some businesses in the area to carry some of the day to day traffic to the area when there is not something big going on and also booking events at Hilton, CY, Jack Trice, etc that will feed into demand for anything that will be going into CyTown. Basically need a wide variety of businesses and events that will all mutually benefit each other to stay viable year round.

Have you ever attended the Special Olympics? There are a ton of people there. Yeah I would guess there will be less people on a random Tuesday, but there are events there, and they are planning more.

That being said there doesnt have to be an event every night for those places to have business. There isnt an event on Duff every night, and plenty of businesses are busy enough. There isnt an event every night down town and CornBred doesnt have an issue. There isnt an event every night and Wallabys is fine.

A lot of the business in CyTown will not be student only type business. You want college bars you go to Campus town, That is not what is being pushed in this location.

Add in a few more events, concerts, conventions, etc and CyTown will be plenty busy.
