Who are some actors and actresses that you saw them in things or they were once on a trajectory where you thought they'd be massive stars and ended up in the 'holy **** whatever happened to them?' category?

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is on right now. I cannot believe Mia Sara was never a bigger star. Honestly she might be the most stunning actress of that 80s timeframe. And she's great in this. She was also in Legend in that same timeframe. I know she married Sean Connery's son.

Another from the 80s I thought would be a huge star was Steve Guttenberg. Handsome, funny, charming. In a LOT of popular movies during that time then POOF. Gone.

Diner
Police Academy movies
Cocoon
Short Circuit
Bedroom Window (underrated thriller)
Three Men and a Baby
Cocoon: The Return
Three Men and a Little Lady
Home For the Holidays

It's like they just decided you're gonna be in big hits but only for a decade and then you're gonna be on movies no one's heard of until the end of time.

It's easy to think people flame out, but I wonder how many simply don't want it? Stardom can be a double-edged sword.
Very true. But you can kind of tell if that's the case by looking at IMDB and all the shows/movies actors/actresses have been in. If you see a hard stop of acting gigs it's safe to say they just chose a different career path. But a lot of these are still working it's just in straight to video type stuff.

Alison Lohman is a good example of what you described though. She was a teen actress that was shooting up the ranks. White Oleander, Big Fish, Flicka, Matchstick Men (most underseen and best movie not many have seen), Drag Me To Hell (so ******* great), Beowulf, then POOF she just left LA and has been in like 2-3 things in the past 20 years.

Daphne Zuniga of Spaceballs fame is another one from 80's

Walton Goggins. He's starting to get more attention since he appeared on White Lotus, but it may have come too late in his career. He's always been one of my favorites, starting with Justified. He's been in several movies Django Unchained, the Hateful Eight, Cowboys and Aliens, playing minor roles, and even had his own short-lived sitcom, The Unicorn, but it just seems he never took that next big step. He's doing Walmart commercials now.

He's so underrated, agreed! He was so great in The Righteous Gemstones on HBO too.

Its hard to say he never made it big when he had main roles in justified, vice principals, the righteous gemstones, and most recently a huge role in Fallout. He is definitely great though

Bridget Fonda is another. Not that I thought she would be like a Julia Roberts or something. But given her family pedigree thought she'd be around awhile. But she intentionally left the biz to focus on her family. She's been out of acting for 25 years.

Single White Female
Singles
Army of Darkness
Point of No Return
Jackie Brown
A Simple Plan
Lake Placid

That's a hefty six year run.

You also wouldn't recognize her today. She was in a car accident that really deblitated her.

He’s starting to get really big. Rightfully so.
