Absolutely not, they need a known factor, a guy coming in off 1 run in a power conference is not getting the UNC job. Yeah a tourny run is nice but still went 10-10 in conference

I agree with you, but how many of those guys exist? This gets to one of my broader beliefs that one reason college athletics is so nuts is that, in the never ending quest for more, these schools think there's simply a Cignetti out there who needs to be bought, and once the ink is dry they'll get right back to winning just like the good ol' days. And when that doesn't work they think they just need to spend even more and buy someone away from somewhere else. May, Lloyd, and Golden are the only names that come to mind who won't be retiring any time soon and don't coach at Duke, and the first two may say No. In short, virtually the only thing acting as a check on college athletics right now is that there just aren't that many coaches who can build and develop teams that dominate power conferences year after year. I think the reality well-to-do schools don't want to face is that Cignetti may just be a unicorn, and all the money in the world can't conjure another
I think this was more in reference to one of our local sportscasters immediately throwing out TJ to NC as a way to sow chaos for ISU, but nary a peep about the new golden boy at Iowa and the perceived bias of said newscaster.
May is a non starter, Michigan has more money, and more just about everything then UNC. Only way May leaves is for the NBA
That’s because TJ has shown he can do it repeatedly, he’s a much better coach and it’s easy to look at ISU’s future money concerns vs a school like UNC and see it as a good fit.
Iowas coach doesn’t make sense not because he would turn it down but more that he would be a last resort type of pick
Regardless of whether TJ is a better choice, the point was many around here were disappointed, but maybe not surprised that a local news guy started fanning the flames immediately before any national speculation started.

This is the most painful thing to write but what he has done at Iowa is real. He has coached circles around 3 more established coaches in the tournament. And what he did with Drake last year is now validated as not a one off season.
Do they? They went with Davis who had zero head coaching experience. But I agree they'll go with someone with at least SOME head coaching experience...I just think McCollum is more of an actual possibility than you do.
And he is very well connected and liked in the coaching circles. He's a bigger possibility than a lot of people think.
With all this said, my understanding is he is hok through and through. I don't know the relationship with the AD and what vibes U of I leadership is giving him but he is probably in same situation as TJ - he is showing he can compete with his guys and the type of player he can bring to Iowa. Is NC really a step up in the long run career wise.
I would love to see the hok tears if he bolted but I think you have many years of ISU and hok battles that are pretty dead even.
My point stands...he had no coaching experience. We are in agreement, they aren't hiring anyone that doesn't have a strong history.
It’s the tournament, chaos happens and no one cares about what happens at drake.
You need someone with a better track record then just one year in a power conference and no name or recruiting acumen to go to UNC
Murphy stopped being a serious sports reporter a long time ago. He's more concerned now with his social media presence and promoting all the zany things he and his wife do together.
