Bill Fennelly

Hot take: ISU should have dumped WBB instead of women gymnastics.

2.5 years seems to be the average shelf life before this programs sucks all the joy of playing from someone. Truly impressive stuff.

If I were CBF, I would encourage Billy to beat the bushes for a great first HC job. Then hire someone with decent HC experience who is willing to take this gig for an inside track next year. I would love it to be Heather E. But it needs to be someone who can push us forward in some of our team shortcomings. Offer to have any of the big 3 who are still here to participate in the hiring process to whatever degree they wish and is proper. Might be the best shot to keep Addy.

Man, after reading that, can’t really argue that it’s been pretty mediocre for 15 years. How much mileage can you get from the “300 fans in 1996” argument? It’s been 30 years!
Exactly. BF has needed a major change in his approach to the WBB game for at least a decade, and he has refused to make that change, or been blind to the need for change. Now it's gonna get unpleasant, if not ugly.

Take a look at our program's defensive rating out of all D1 teams over the last seven seasons:
25-26: 219/363
24-25: 202/362
23-24: 273/360
22-23: 121/361
21-22: 137/356
20-21: 263/343
19-20: 103/351
Even with a decent offense most years, our lack of pressure, rebounding, athletes, etc. is going to continue to result in early exits from the tournament as long as we stick with this system.

Even despite this teams offensive woes at times, if they just played defense like the men's team does, they probably would go at the very worst 13-5 in conference play and at least be in contention for a hosting spot in the tournament....the defense is absolutely atrocious

If they played defense like the men's teams, we would have won this conference every year. We are like in the top 10-20 in offense every year. If we could even get to the top 50 of defense it would have been a game changer.

Totally agree.....I see the same problems with our defense too...slow rotations, simply just sagging off defenders and giving them plenty of room to operate/shoot, and my goodness the amount of screens our girls go under probably set a world record this season.

Those 3 numbers while Audi has played for ISU are telling and provide, by far, the biggest reason why the team hasn't been better over the past 3 seasons. Any perceived offensive issues or lack of athleticism/mobility (beyond Audi) were secondary to these defensive numbers.

Too late now given the roster attrition that has already occurred and perhaps to occur, but the only fix IMO was to play more zone to hide/cover Audi's lack of mobility (as well as improve her conditioning to be more mobile). And to successfully play zone, Bill needed a starter in the 6-2 or taller range to deploy it with Addy and Audi. Playing zone with Jada, AJ and Hare was never going to work.

Can Jamie tell Bill to talk to TJ about defense?
