I think you will be waiting awhile. Until BYD (or any Chinese manufacturer) decides/is able to manufacture and assemble much of the vehicles in the US.

Or Dark Factories become the norm and the labor part of building a vehicle become neutral whether build in the US or China.
I assume dark factories is a robotic term, but if you'd explain it, I'd appreciate it.

I've never been dumb enough to run out of gas or battery, so I can't answer your question. I guess i would treat like a breakdown.

How many EV's have you seen on the side of the road because they are out of battery?
I've got a old POS dodge dakota that the fuel gauge quit working on a note pad and every 300 miles I don't run out of gas. @BoxsterCy was nice enough to start an ICE thread and motorcy still trolls this thread. Do I own a EV no will I in my life time probably. That's why I follow this thread. I really don't want to see motorcy catch a ban from the board but a ban from this thread for them sure wouldn't bother me.

I've never either, and there are certainly those who will with either. so again how do you charge an EV that has run out of charge on the side of the road?
I'm guessing you could just take a generator out to it and charge it up you DF, generators are portable, would it be fast and easy no, would it work yes.

Well, if this is a serious question I will give a serious answer. You don’t. You would have to get a tow to a charging station.
I went a different route and suggested generator to the vehicle. Either one works. Yours is most likely right now.

That could work but it would take a long time. As someone mentioned previously tow trucks could carry chargers to give an EV a boost. I am unsure how that would work, but it wouldn't be a fast charge. Maybe all that would be needed is to get a vehicle to 5 percent or enough to drive to the nearest charging station.

I read an article a couple of years ago that someone did this in their Rivian/Tesla a few years ago just to see what all the vehicle would do to avoid running out etc. and it was fairly extensive. Ultimately it won't let you just accidenttally not have enough charge, it will yell at you a lot.

I believe they were able to "run it dry" and the procedure was to just get a tow to a charger.

I have a family member that has been driving a form of one of these for Pepsi. He had a few complaints initially, but now says he could never go back. He does short hauls in California.

You got it - most of the assembly is by robots so there doesn’t need to be lights.

Mrs. CyCoug thinks it's about time we upgrade a car. She really likes Mazda CX-5s, which are fine cars. But she's also ok looking at EVs and hybrids (which the Mazda CX-5 does not have). So I put together this handy comparison guide of the Mazda CX-5 along with most/all current EV and hybrids (using AI of course). The scoring is my own formula weighting total fuel cost, reliability, total cost of ownership etc.

I figured it could be helpful to some people here: https://1drv.ms/x/c/eb1778238370a62e/IQCnHSppG12fTbsCOf06LJIAARw94z4SxJE2-F1ym7W5Pbc?e=hKIa88

Great spreadsheet! One minor note (that may make no difference to you), but the Mach E does have a NACS adapter that works for Tesla super-chargers (that Ford sent to owners at no-cost a while back).

For gas cars when I rent one, I forget to turn them off if they have auto start/stop all the time. Can never figure out why I can't lock the car. And I also forget to lock my wifes car when we go places.
I'm always afraid that I'm going to leave my Kia in drive when I get out after driving the Model Y.

I'm on the reservation list for the R2, but the wife thinks we need a 3rd row so I'm also looking quite a bit at the Ioniq 9, though the ICCU issues scare me a bit. Anyone with experience of that vehicle (or its cousin the EV9)?

If it wasn't for the ICCU issues, and how they don't appear to have a solution, I think I'd buy an EV9.

There is some political stuff here so if that bugs you stay away, but there is some fascinating stuff here regarding automation/dark factory production in China.

About halfway through they describe an automated fabrication machine as big as a house they dump aluminum ingots into and it kicks out the chassis of a car that is quality controlled by AI. Pretty nuts.

Listened to that on the way home. I knew they made strides, but damn.

Crazy eye opening to me.

I understand the tariff on BYD, I truly do. But we are talking about a product that is going to be made a lot cheaper and with better technology than our automakers can do. It’s simply a fact and I don’t know how to get around it.
