JJeff Injury Updates

Surprised that Nate was ok with letting a player that he's better than get showcased over him. True team player.
I do think that Nate is a rare breed. I think he’s been asked to play a part…glue guy. He was on his way to being a 20pt guy at UNI before getting hurt.

He has imho turned off some of his game because that wasn’t his role here.

Although not common, Xray can miss small fractures. Probably not the case in this instance though. They waited a few days for swelling and inflammation to subside a bit for better imaging with the MR.

Trying to confirm what they already know through the objective findings and to rule out any possibility of missed fracture or soft tissue damage with MRI.

As long as there is no structural damage, the decision will be based on strength and mobility. Which would be at that point “Medically Cleared to play” as risk for further damage is minimal.

Then the decision comes directly from the athlete and the Staff will evaluate with drills and performance as to what he can and can’t do. Determine the benefit he will bring if he plays.

No one outside of the building knows the answer. And they probably won’t know themselves until Friday.

He’s a Dawg but also a great teammate.

Trust JJ and TJ.

Part of the reason we've been better is because the guys turned it up for the postseason.

Another part is that teams haven't had a chance to fully scout what we'd look like without Jefferson.

None of that supports the idea that we're better without him.

If he suddenly reappeared at 100%, our ceiling for this tournament would be national championship and our expectation would probably be Final Four at minimum.

As it stands, they can still do that, but the path is harder than it would have been.
This is what a logical, non-"hot take", well thought out, coherent take on our basketball team both with & without JJ sounds like.

Please see yourself out of CF, because we don't do that here.

This times a million.

This team is built for the tournament.

The elevated play was going to happen with or without Joshua.

It’s now amplified because of his absence.

There's a lot going on with your post. But I feel like the bolded part here undermines any credibility the rest of it might have, because this stat is either lying, making things up, or just ridiculous hyperbole. Jefferson has averaged 2.5 turnovers per game this season, and 2.8 in conference play.

Jefferson's turnover rate this year for the whole season and for conference play alone are actually lower than Lipsey's respective turnover rates last season. I assume you also complained about Lipsey handling the ball too much last year?

I feel like I need to preface this with I think Iowa State is much better with a locked in JJeff. He is an all American for a reason.

I will say, as far as the turnovers go, it hasn’t been that he turns it over, it’s how he turns it over. Having some awareness of the double on the backdown and he probably cuts his turnovers in half, or more. All turnovers are not created equal, like it or not. Getting the ball stolen off the dribble and creating a live ball turnover, is viewed as worse than throwing a pass away.

I’ve argued that we should have sat him a couple times this year if we’re being honest.

TJ is tough, but also a players coach somehow.

There were several things JJ was doing that was hurting ISU and his draft status.

He’s a great passer…in the post.
He’s a capable closer…when focused.

He’s a poor ball handler outside of open court.
Dribbling in/ backing down allows D’s to collapse and it’s where 90% of his team leading 5 to’s a game happen.
When he gets low that way and the d collapses he turns it over or throws up highly contested hand grenades.
It stagnates the O and clogs up the lane. Without Toure, TL, or an unaggressive Hy-Zeee shooting the 3 well, teams collapse on JJ, cover MM, and sag off the rest knowing Buchanan isn’t a threat outside of 5 ft.

Hy-Zeeee takes bigger guys out to the 3 line, makes them respect his shot and then blows by them or leaves room for a cutter.
Hy-Zee also moves the ball faster up top with his dribble / weave. Where speeding JJ up just adds to’s.

I think maybe TJ was hoping to showcase JJ ability to handle the ball…but imho it backfired.

I’ll assume that part of it is draft results do matter in showing kids development for recruiting knowing we can’t overpay them like other programs might. So making JJ a mid 1st rounder matters…you can’t sit him if that’s your goal.
If I had never seen him play and just read this post, I'd look at the roster and wonder why Mulder doesn't replace Jefferson in the starting lineup!

Look, I've yelled my TV when he's turned the ball over. There have been frustrating moments, even a couple of frustrating games. But if you were to track ever time he's touched the ball over the season and sorted by positive, neutral, and negative outcomes, I believe the positive dwarf the negative. He touches the ball A LOT! Which means more opportunities for a bad outcome. Compare that to Heise, for example. The vast majority of Nate's touches result in a neutral outcome. He catches a pass, then passes it off. Joshua is depended on for making plays and he's done so all year.

All this and the schedule so far has been a cakewalk, haven’t had to turn it up all the way yet and still won’t have to until Sunday

Where did this "JJeff" come from? Hadn't heard anyone call him that all year, and CW dropped it a handful of times on 2 Guys like he's part of the squad.
I have used it all year, because writing it all out is too much, and JJ is too short. The man has 6 syllables for gods sake.

"Cuz sayin all those nouns over and over again, really wears you down."

This I agree with. And he's had his share of detractors over these 2 seasons.

I think those type of turnovers were more of an early to mid conference schedule event.

He has been more aware of late.

To me, JJ was most outstanding is 3 areas: drawing FT, assists, DRB.
These 3 categories need to increase in the tournament by others (and they have).
Regarding Milan + Blake + Dom1 + Dom2: each of these 4 players have increases in all 3 areas.

Blake has 10 assists in 2 games. Milan and Nelson each have 7 FTA. Blake and Milan
each have 8 DRB. These role expansions need to continue. I would like to see JJ-style drives to the basket by Blake and Pleta (if this is in their skillset). Milan needs to crash the boards. Nelson needs to drive the lane in transition. Toure needs to be more aggressive on pullups, blowbys, and 3 pointers. It seems like Jefferson's domination made the rest of team hesitant and complacent.

And yet the analytics showed that over the course of the season ISU was massively better with Jefferson on the court.

ISU beat a dog turd team in round 1 by 30 without JJ. ISU played a great half without Jefferson against a 7 seed. I get the Kentucky name, but that was a mediocre team that didn’t have a point guard, and turned the ball over 20 times.

it isn’t some mystery. ISUs offense was great when Toure was aggressive, and it was bad when he would barely look to shoot and you have two guys, the guy guarding BB/Pleta and the guy guarding Toure camped in the lane.

But feel free to claim your observations are correct when analytics, TJ and simply watching our offense with and without an aggressive Toure are all wrong.

This team is still really good without JJ. But with JJ and aggressive versions of Toure and Heise are NC-level.

It is truly remarkable that there can even be a debate about whether or not the team’s prospects improve with Jefferson out.

Is this explained by what we’re seeing on the court legitimately suggesting this team performs as unit that is greater than the sum of its parts when you remove its versatile All-American?

Or is it potentially explained by the same underlying factors that explain essentially everything else going on in this country today?

My hunch is where one falls on this correlates highly with one’s ability to explain the difference between marginal and effective tax rates.

I think it's just cope from the fans who want it to be true.

Assuming best case scenario, what level of performance can we expect? 80%? Will he be able to be an effective defender and rebounder?

First round certainly was, not sure Kentucky would have been a cakewalk for other teams, we were just strong where they were weak, but if you don't have the ability to turn them over and make every possession a scramble, they could have been dangerous for someone.
