*** Official #16 Texas Tech vs #4 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Can anybody take off their rose-colored glasses and acknowledge that TJ not being an actual basketball coach, matters?

In-game knowledge of the game matters. The lead man calling plays matters. We are forced to rely solely on staff help and out-of-game coaching to succeed.

Every coach has competencies. TJ is very good and knows his limits which is why he hired this staff. It’s a good thing.

Everyone says great guard play carries teams deep in the tournament. This team doesn’t have great guard play. Lipsey and Toure are huge liabilities on offense.
They’re both good defensively but when any team can sag off because a 4 year senior still has no jump shot is tough. I hope Toure develops one while he’s here it’s obviously too late for Lipsey. Again Lipsey is one of the greats and hustles like crazy but if could be a threat from 3 it’d be such a game changer

Correct me if I’m wrong, but early in the season we saw a lot of ball movement and slashers to the bucket. That all disappeared once conference play started. It’s like that game plan was thrown out.

Cause for concern, sure. To say TJ sucks as a coach is moronic.
Where did I say in my post that TJ sucks as a coach? I think he’s amazing at putting a roster together and recruiter and an above average in game coach. He for sure isn’t elite in-game or this team wouldn’t be laying this many turds this late in the season.

Yeah and the majority of our losses have come in the last six games. There is definitely cause for concern here. With a loss to Arizona then we are looking at a 3 seed and a team that hasn’t been consistent towards the end of the season. These diarrhea offensive performances happens a lot more than I’d like.
How many times ISU was 3 seed under other ISU coaches? The best Johnny Orr could do was 7 seed.

TJ is a great coach in the sense that he's a CEO type. He delegates a lot to the assistant coaches; the coach running the offense leaves a lot to be desired
If that’s the case then TJ will also need to self reflect and at some point decide if a shake up is needed. I’m a terrible X and Os guy, so I’m not saying that we do or don’t. I’ll leave that debate to people that know ball better than me.

We had 59 shots today, and still lost by 9. One more shot would not have made a difference one way or another. Its an interesting stat, but less important than making double digest three pointers.

They got to 59 with meaningless shots at the end...

What it tells you is they don't get shots off turnovers, when shots are below 60 it means they did not turn the opponent over enough to be successful. Which means their shooting percentage will go down as well with less open looks or drives to the hoop.

Kind of a selffulling prophecy thing.

Amazing how every possession TTU could get Anderson or Petty switched onto Milan, Jefferson and Buchanan every possession, and ISU can’t get mismatches.

Half court offense is not good. But it’s also easy to defend a team with so little offensive skill in the guard court.

My biggest issue with TJ is he refuses to just settle into a basic man to man defense. When you are getting burnt by shooters you can’t keep trying to trap, trap, and trap. It’s so f*cking frustrating.
Trap was the difference today. Tech handled it, as most good teams do, and got wide open shots. People make a big deal about 4-5 tough shots they made. The issue is the dunks, layups, and wide open 3s. And that's what good teams are going to do with it. There is a reason it doesn't work in the nba, good players that are well coached, dice it up.

I love Lipsey but his inability to hit any sort of jump shot and Toure having zero offensive game is not great either
There will be no criticism of Lipsey's lack of offense. I did it 10 games in and was told you can't criticize anyone who has given 4 years to ISU and has the accolades he does. He's an all-american. He's immune from criticism so blame it on someone else

I still believe Bateman needs to start over Toure. Toure isn’t a threat to score and Batemon has improved a lot defensively.

Toure 0-7 from the field, 2 rebounds, 1 assist compared to 1-6 with 0 rebounds and 0 assists from Batemon isn’t much better.

We won’t win many games against anyone in March with those numbers, no matter who starts.

That happened the entire first half. We upped the intensity after that.
Having to "up the intensity" is a coaching issue. Like I said before TJ's personality means his teams don't panic....

But his teams also don't play with urgency.

They wouldn't be if we could get an offensive rebound or learn to set screens for Milan. He needs to move more or be way off the 3 point line to draw out the defense more.

When JJ goes to the hole they all crash him in the paint. Where is the help?
