House of the Dragon

It’s interesting I heard on a podcast today that Martin gave the show runners some additional material for this series that isn’t in the books to help bring the show some additional depth.
I thought I heard awhile back he gave them like 12 unpublished books worth.

Yep, GRRM plans to write 12 novellas.

Maeker not knowing where Egg is might be canon as the book is kind of open ended. Maeker never fully agrees, he just stares at Dunk and walks away.

I have very little faith that this show won’t be ruined by HBO eventually, but season 1 was a masterpiece. Hope they stay as faithful as possible to source material

I kind of fell off of House of Dragons, just because I didn't really find any of the characters interesting. But this latest series is pretty fun. I hope they bring back the Baratheon in S2, he was awesome.

I don't have my copy on me because i lent it to a friend after they started the show, but I don't remember it that way. Dunk is pretty clear that he will take Egg as a squire but only as a hedge knight and not at summerhall. Maeker actually agrees after Dunk points out how his other sons haven't turned out well with a silver spoon in their mouth. I think the show actually did a well job showing that Maeker cares for his sons even if they are far from perfect.

In the end of the book, Maeker is the one that greets Dunk as they are leaving and tells him to take Egg iirc. That is the whole purpose of the boot Maeker gave Egg. The boot is an important plot device in the next two books.

My theory is that either Egg is going to create the boot himself, or they will reconcile sometime before the next season since the second book is roughly 1ish years after the first.

Also GRRM acts like his is focusing only on TWOW now, though I would enjoy more Dunk and Egg books.

That character oozed charisma from the party to the fight to the aftermath. Yelling "be gone, witch!" at his own incompetent maester got a good laugh out of me

I think you’re misremembering it. I just pulled out my copy to check.

In the book, Maekar goes to meet Dunk at his camp and asks him to take Egg. Dunk lays out he’ll take him but not at Summerhall. And Maekar and Dunk say their lines from the show verbatim (“did the trial addle your wits ser. My son is blood of the DRAGON…”)! In the book, after Dunk responds about Daeron and Aerion, Maekar walks off without saying anything else.

The next page Egg shows up and says his father told him to serve Ser Duncan. But it is not explicitly clear Maekar actually gave his blessing. So it’s left open-ended.

The after credits scene where Maekar gets pissed is not in the book.

I just want to read about Chad Wyman Manderly taking it to the Boltons and Freys.

Yes, I just reread it this last weekend. My biggest issue was I wanted a line about Dragons or Dragonflies as Dunk is watching a Dreagonfly flutter around.

Boy, did this Peter Claffey fall into it or what? He has been doing a great job, but to have the lead on a show like this that may go on for several seasons is a huge role. And he doesn’t have to share the spotlight with 8-10 other big costars.

I stand corrected but how does Egg get his signet ring then? IS that off page in books or does Dunk see Maekar give it. I cannot remember. Google doesn't help and they only have articles that doesn't say if Dunk sees the ring or if Egg could possible steal it.

We don’t know how he got it. He just randomly has a ring in the second novella and talks about “using my boot”
