Iowa High School BEDS count 24-25

Some small school realignment news...

AGWSR is leaving the NICL for the Iowa Star citing slightly reduced travel with the NICL going away from divisions after this year. In reality, the travel doesn't change much but they have a chance to be much more competitive playing other 1A schools rather than all 2As and Union who sits on the 2A/3A line.

The Iowa Star has also invited Belle Plaine, East Marshall and Gladbrook-Reinbeck. I would expect East Marshall and G-R to accept. No idea on Belle Plaine.
Isn’t that where north butler is going. They were going to leave TOI next year but their notification was too late. Guessing TOI will implode soon. Either losing the very SE and very west or just plain collapsing. The old North Iowas schools agreeing to the TOI to appease Osage in wrestling was stupid.

Yes and so is Nashua-Plainfield.

The Iowa Star is going to be 22 schools split into two divisions if everyone accepts.

The frustrating thing with Osage is that they could have joined the NEIC as a replacement for Waverly and it would have fixed all the issues that both leagues had/are having.

Hadn’t heard about Nashua. I figured they would at least be looking.

It wouldn’t have fixed the mess that was eagle grove. They were looking to get back into the NCC a couple years after they left. They were getting hammered there and joined the NIC which was becoming the TOI the next year. They proceeded to get destroyed in the TOI also. So they wanted back to closer schools. NCC saw this as a chance to get the schools of the NIC conference they had been trying to court for a long time, forest city and garner.

Everyone I know is happy that EG is leaving, a crap hole of a town and school to go to. Always issues and the team that the other schools all talk about as being the nastiest and douchiest ones in the conference

East Marshall has asked to join the SICL as well.

I ended up going down a rabbit hole over Christmas break- 10 years ago my family and I moved back to Iowa from living in Lincoln Nebraska for 8 years.

Knowing how the high school divisions and classes work in Nebraska I wanted to see where our current school- class 3A girls and 2A boys- would be for class size in Nebraska. I learned that in Nebraska they do not use entire enrollment in grades 9-11 to determine a schools class size, they determine their class size strictly by gender. For girls sports they only use the enrollment of the girls and for the boys sports they only use the enrollment of the boys. I think this is far superior to what Iowa does as a whole. Who knows- it may not make any difference in where Iowa classes its schools but I'm sure there are instances where certain schools may have a lot more boys than girls and also the reverse with many more girls than boys. It would be interesting to see if Iowa has ever entertained this idea- It may slot schools where they are more deserving to be.

One other thing Nebraska does I think would be good to implement in Iowa. They have something called Wildcard Points. I know they do it for basketball and I'm guessing for almost every other sport that has bracket play at the end of the season. Each regular season game It has a formula of points given depending on- 1) class of team played compared to yours, 2) opponents record, 3) win/loss of game played. These points accumulated are divided by total games played and that total averaged number seeds the teams in a pre-selected district- more average points higher seed, less average points lower seed. I think in Iowa that too many times in district play teams are not seeded correctly. This would take out the guess work seeding teams, what seems to me, strictly by final records.

Sure, holes can probably be punched in these "changes" but all in all I believe these would be good things to consider for the IAHSAA ane IGHSAU.

Still surprised at North Butler and Nashua-Plainfield leaving the TOI. I figured they would want to stick with the old corn bowl members. I guess with the addition of AGWSR and GR that is a couple schools closer to their size, but is it really changing travel for them that much? They would be in the north but Rockford, Riceville, Clarksville, Janesville, and whoever else, would be a good amount smaller. As someone else said make districts at this point or split 1A again and make a A division like in football.

The TOI is going to one conference section and playing everyone. That means Nashua gets to go to Armstrong, Buffalo center, Algona also. Some long hauls.

I expect to see some movement out of the Bluegrass Conference with Ankeny Christian and Moravia.

That's basically the old Iowa football playoffs system from the 70s through early 90s -- prior to district play.

With Des Moines Christian moving on from the WCAC I can see Ankeny Christian replacing them. Don't know if is being considered, but they would be a good fit. Ankeny Christian has wanted out of the Bluegrass for years.

Isn't the Iowa Star even more spread out? Like having schools south of I-80?
They are but they're split into divisions and don't count crossover games in league standings. They won't routinely have to go even south of Hwy 20. Bosco, Dunkerton and Cedar Falls (Valley Lutheran and Cedar Ridge Christian) are as far south as that division is going to go.

Yeah, that's not too bad.
