***Official 2025 Weather Thread***

I haven't had to de-ice in a long time - how long does that typically take here? I know in the winter most airlines factor in de-icing on most flights to allow for time, but I'm also of the thought of if I'm connecting anywhere, I need at least an hour and a half layover. I can do Minneapolis with a 40 minute layover (lived there for 10 years and spent quite a bit of time at that airport), but ATL/DTW, I need only book flights with a 90 minute layover.
Depends on how well they are staffed and if all the equipment is working. The busiest time to fly out of DSM is that early morning window. The majority of those planes sit out over night so they typically need to be deiced prior to taxiing. I've missed connecting flights where I've had at least an hour and a half layover. Just in general DSM seems to be really poorly staffed for as much as that airport has grown.

The weather ***** caused my my flight from DSM yesterday afternoon after the winter squall started, so no Birmingham Bowl for me today as planned! Minor inconvenience for me though, but there were folks on my flight trying to go to Spain, Argentina, etc. for the New Year who couldn't get rescheduled until later in the week. Just a sucky weather day yesterday for flying.
We've been there - took us four days to get to Egypt in Jan 2024. Pro tip - never fly Lufthansa in the winter. If flights get shut down, they close their counter at the airport and go home. At least, that's what they did to us in Frankfurt.

We got stuck about 10 years ago because of the fuel trucks. Only one was working, and it had to service all the planes. After we finally got fueled, we had to wait again for the deicer. Such a cluster ****...

Son and daughter- in- law stuck in Minneapolis. Looks like I35 still closed until Ames. I know it's driving him crazy waiting for the green light.

Any update on the roads around Ames would be coming from the Clearlake General area, but probably pushing on Highway 69. Any updates on those

Roads to the east of 35 have been marked back to partially covered with snow. There are still a few travel not advised roads to the west of 35, including the section of 69 between 20 and Jewell.

The section of 69 between Blairsburg and Jewel still looks pretty rough on the snow plow cameras.
