Cytown Update

I think I mentioned public restrooms somewhere when the latest drawings were out several weeks ago. I saw none, yet the whole promo is to encourage families to bring their kids to the playground, have picnics and generally spend the day.
If we're thinking of the same drawings, it looks to me like there are public restrooms in several of the buildings. (One of the buildings and the amphitheater below, for example.)

Actually, I meant the drawings or renderings whatever they’re called, of all the outdoor area. And maybe it wasn’t drawings, maybe it was the PR video.
My mom brain immediately went to “where is a bathroom or a drinking fountain? And how far away is parking?”

This is a great question. On big football gamedays, the bathroom (porta-potty) situation has been less than ideal with very long wait times.

Is there anywhere that lists how many public restrooms there will be in Cy-Town? It'd be wonderful to have accessible public restrooms over just porta-potties. But if there are still insanely long waits then it's kinda moot.

Most don't know that the original concept for the Iowa State Center put forth by President James Hilton was for one large multipurpose building. Fisher (he of the Fisher Theater) of Marshalltown brought in the architecture firm of Crites McConnell of Cedar Rapids who proposed the Center conceot change to the design pictured above.

But much like the original concept design for CyTown, things changed from that original concept - especially the designs for Hilton and the Fisher Theater.

Honestly I rarely buy any concessions at sporting events and had no idea Hilton and Trice were that bad for Concessions. Most I ever buy is a drink. The old plans to expand the Hilton Concourse would have probably helped out the concessions I am thinking. Is it the quality of the food, what they offer or just hard trying to get stuff? Just curious
I'm guessing most people answer both, but the lines are ridiculously long, for what is being served.

I think we have to keep reminding ourselves (I know I'm guilty of this) that the 6 days a year JTS hosts a football game are not the primary reason this is being build.

For most of the year, it doesn't make sense to have sizable banks of bathrooms, outside of near the Cylo (which are shown in the floorplans) for other shows held there, but bringing in a bunch of port-a-johns is still the best way to handle the overwhelming gameday tailgate crowds a few Saturdays every year.

Not sure why but I love the elevated walkways. Feels so mid century utopian to me, love em. I hope we keep them and extend them. I want miles of elevated walkways.

Liking them and paying for them are two different things. I like them, but I know even when I went to school the costs to maintain them were ridiculous. And, that was in the 80's. Several of them were closed because of failing structure. When I design things, I place 'maintenance' and 'operational' costs at the very top of the design criteria.

Problem is, they don't do that. Where I tailgate, I kid you not, they should have a minimum of 3x the number they provide on gameday. Maybe 4x. So if CyTown is built and no public restrooms are added, that's even less space than before for the already under ordered amount of them. Where are they going to put the necessary porta-potties with now even significantly less space for them?

Bathroom and concession lines are all ready pretty bad inside JTS, so having the lines even worse outside the stadium, will be beyond frustrating to fans and visitors.

And I understand CyTown isn't just for football gameday or for football fans, but let's not kid ourselves about how that wouldn't even be a possibility without football. CyTown if it comes to fruition like AD JP believes it will, it shouldn't have problems turning a profit other days of the year and still be able to provide adequate facilities.

I see less and less people wanting to go places where parking is a headache, bathroom access is insufficient, and everything is pricey. Trying to build something that will make access to things like bathrooms more difficult on gameday is not a good plan imo.

The porta-potties situation should not be any worse than the last 1-2 years that everyone has already lived through so I'm not sure I understand the less space argument you are making.

I also don't think any Cytown traffic on game days will be in addition to all the people that were already tailgating. A lot of the traffic will be from people that probably utilize Cytown instead of traditional tailgating.
