No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

Remember like 6 weeks ago when an OL was kicking off in Boulder and people were saying the season was over?
Did we quit that game? No? Didnt think so.

Do you know who is staying, who is leaving, who wanted or didnt want to play in the bowl? No... Didnt think so.

No to all of this which has nothing to do with what I was saying, which is how odd it is that people thought the season was over, and are OK with like 4th or 5th string players suit up as long as it's a bowl game, but thought the season was over when an ISU OL was kicking off.

Again, you dont know who was going to stay and play and who was not, so quit assuming you do. Also there are a few of our backups, a few of the ones that are going to be still here, and playing, maybe starting next year. That could have really benefitted from the extra practice and play in a starting roll, in a game atmosphere.

I never thought the season was over, I just said it was a reason we were struggling. But you act like you know its going to be all 5th string players, you dont know that, you dont know ****. So quit acting like you do, you are guessing, and that is that.

Point is when it got tough this season we didnt just forfeit, we didnt quit, we kept playing, we kept fighting.

Wow, um, I was one who thought it was stupid that CFers were giving up on the team with a month left because I understand that the team had time to get some things figured out and get back on track, which they did, which was fun to watch, and great for them.

I've never said I knew who was leaving. I have no idea who is or isn't available. I did ask who's actually available to coach and if that was one reason for no bowl.

The original post that you quoted was sarcastic in response to someone else's sarcasm, in how people are getting so warped about the bowl situation, and actually people that are assuming everyone's leaving or not available, etc.

A bunch of people on here lose sight of just how much goes into a football team and season and how things can change and take some time to work out of.

In short I'm on the same page as you. Maybe go back into the thread a bit further for some context or to find that I've never said that I knew who was leaving or not, or that you do (no idea where you pulled that out of), and certainly never seriously implied that the players gave up.

Wild stuff.

Here is what I responded to:

"which is how odd it is that people thought the season was over, and are OK with like 4th or 5th string players suit up as long as it's a bowl game, but thought the season was over when an ISU OL was kicking off."

I guess I didnt see how that was being sarcastic, I may have missed it, but sarcasm is not always evident in writing, instead it sure sounded like you were also implying there we were only going to be able to put 4th and 5th stringers on the field because everyone else would leave/quit. Im sure the 17 seniors would like to go to a bowl one last time, outside maybe one or two that are looking at the draft etc.

To me you are implying that we may only have the 4th or 5th string available to play. Which is why I said no one knows that, no one knows who would play and not. The portal doesnt open until Jan. 2, anyone can play in the bowl and still hit the portal if they want. Or they can just quit on their team and not play. But the leadership at ISU, should have said no we have an obligation to fill and we will do it. Period. We are not quitting on ourselves, our teammates, our fans, or our conference. It was already said that several of the assistants were lined up to coach in the bowl, just like Wazzu is doing, Just like Ol Miss is doing, just like Penn state is doing. They figured out how to make it work, they didnt quit, hell Wazzu had the same amount of time to figure it out as us.

Beyond that, Beyond just you, my reply is for all those saying the same things like, who will coach, who will play, who will leave, everyone is going to leave etc etc.

Not accepting the bowl is probably the dumbest thing I have heard come out of ISU in a long time. Then again I was raised to not be a quitter and to fulfill my obligations.

God I hope you dont raise kids that way. I raise my kids to not be quitters. I raise my kids to fulfill their obligations. I raise my kids to finish what they started. I raise my kids that if they start something, like a sport, you finish the season, you dont quit. If you dont like it you stick out the season you started then move on after. You dont give up when it gets tough, when things dont go your way.

Its the same way I was raised.

What kind of example is this to young people you are supposedly trying to mold. There should have been an adult in the room that said, no we are going to play, we are going to finish what we started, we are going to fulfill our obligations, we are not going to quit.

Too many people today are quitters, that give up at the first sign of adversity, and to many people are acceptable of that.

As a famous saying goes "sack up and grow a pair" and that is really fitting here. I get it they are all disappointed, all pissed that Campbell walked out on them, when he preached loyalty. I get it they are all pissed, but its time to pull on their big boy pants and grow up. Not everything is going to always go their way and the sooner they figure that out the better.

I can't believe I'm replying again but I'll try to explain this.

-ISU went through a rough stretch where nothing went well, and iirc after the CU or BYU games, many were saying the season was over since they could only make a 'meaningless' bowl game since the CCG was out of the picture. I got 'dumbed' for saying that there were X amount of weeks left, because there was.

-After the bowl rejection, some were melting down about how it must mean 100 players just don't want to play or 60 are injured or something and how terrible it was for the fans, etc. Some said they don't care if it's scout teamers.

-My sarcasm or whatever it can be called is merely about the back and forth of how CFers are so upset about missing a bowl game that they may or may not have gone to, that's 'meaningless', after the season was 'over' with 4 games left.

I don't know why they rejected the bowl game, and I don't think it's been confirmed, but either way I guess it wouldn't have been so meaningless now.

For what its worth I think those that were saying that are stupid too. I dont think we should quit or give up then, and I dont think we should now. Regardless of the reason/excuse.

I dont think bowls are any more meaningless now than they were 20 years ago. If you went to the Liberty Bowl in 1995 you were not winning the National Championship, just like if you go to the Liberty Bowl now, you arent in the Playoff and winning the National Championship. During the BCS era, if you were not in the National championship game, and went to the Fiesta Bowl, you were not winning the National championship. Bowls are no different now, outside the NY6 are part of the playoff. The importance of the Alamo bowl today is no different than what it was in the 80s, outside it pays more now and has become a higher level bowl. Prior to BCS there was basically 1 bowl that might matter, but ISU playing in the Peach Bowl in '77 was not going to win us a national championship. So how did that bowl matter any more than any bowl now outside the playoff?

I said injuries affect the outcome at that time, but that doesnt mean you just quit.

Again, if you were being sarcastic fair enough, I just didnt pick up on it. Good enough.

Not trying to argue, just stating my opinion the same issue raised.

I’ve always felt this way too. If you agree to participate in something, you see it through to the end…whether you end up liking it or not. And I totally agree that there should have been someone (or ideally multiple individuals) who would have stood up and encouraged this team to finish. I’m way more mad about them quitting than I am about Matt leaving. I do feel like we need to get to a point where we don’t have coaches being poached before the season is over though…

We are paying them to play.

The attitude you've outlined is exactly why the players are going to have contracts soon enough that will take away/withhold money from them if they don't play.

Can't have it both ways where you want to be paid to do something, but keep the money and just... not do that something.

Pretty sure after tomorrow there will not be a single coach left from Campbell's staff. Heacock, Mouser, and the position coaches along with the whole S&T team will have moved on. Even if we wanted to play not sure who would coach them.

My god, you realize they have addressed this. If they decided to play in a bowl many if not most of the staff was willing to stay and coach, Heacock was going to coach the bowl. Now that they are done, they are done, so of course they are going to leave now.

This, no one left to coach is such a fallacy. Who is coaching Wazzu in their bowl? Considering we are taking many of their coaches included head coach.

I wish we knew exactly what the overall player sentiment was and the "reason" for voting down a bowl game.

If literally half the team (the better half) has decided to enter the portal or quit and that includes entire position groups (like we have a 3rd string punter needing to play O-line, etc) I understand why the remnant would not want to go get absolutely crushed in a bowl game, and have a much higher chance than usual of getting injured. (IE - would the 3rd string QB want to play in a game where he has 0 starters on the O-line, and only two 2nd stringers, with the rest being walk-ons? You're getting sacked every-other-play even if playing a middling Sun Belt team.)

On the other hand, if they are just losing a handful, and the remnant is just mad or sad that CMC left, that's a terrible reason. Suck it up and deal with it.

Someone will probably say I'm dumb for not thinking the last 40 3rd stringers, walk-ons, and ball boys should go do a bowl game.

Over 100 players in the sidelines for home games every Saturday and now all of a sudden all of them a injured?

Weird how 9 days ago we were able to field a full team and even win a game. Oklahoma State lost their coach 6 weeks ago and were still going.

Iowa State is upset their coach left so they quit on the University and the fans. It's as simple as that. How are any of these players going to handle loss if they just quit?

Welcome to the real world, so if my boss that I really like and hired me decides to get a new job I should just immediately quit too?
That's ridiculous and you know it. That statement did emphasize injuries, but it should be obvious to anyone with even half a brain that the real problem is numbers. Players are leaving--some with the coaches, others to cash in elsewhere. Coaches are leaving.

Sure, ISU hired a coach, but his staff isnt filled and some of them are fulfilling duties at Wazzou (which is something Campbells bunch wont do here).

Who will play? (What do you believe is a minimum roster size to play in a bowl?) Who will coach? Who wants to ******* go to Memphis again anyway?

You aren't even a Cyclone fan. What the **** are you doing in here on your high Boomer horse?

Right now the most important thing we should be doing is getting the new staff in place and working to keep players and bring in new players. This is what’s best for the long term health of the program. I love that we are not even thinking about a bowl game. Strategically this was the right move.
I wasn’t to going to agree with this but then realized it was bolded so now I do agree
