No Bowl Game — Iowa State Turns Down Bowl Bid

I know this probably sounds incredibly naive, but there appears to be absolutely no loyalty whatsoever to the school, community, football program as a whole, or each other. Man, this new day of college athletics is worse than I even imagined.
players commit to the coach, not the university.....it's crazy we even call them "student athletes" at this point too

ooh is that one of those hypothetical games the SEC talks about? Ive always wanted to watch one of those!!

You dont know that would happen. It might, but then again no one would fault them for it either, at that point everyone would know the situation too.

Being a quitter is not fun in my book either.

Paying $500K that we supposedly cant afford is not fun in my book either?
Yeah, you know what…I’m only getting more angry as I think about it. I hope they all leave now, because evidently there was nothing within these players that told them that they were playing for this university…and not just themselves. I truly believe they’ve embarrassed ISU, and I’m not at all happy about it.

It’s a terrible life lesson for themselves too. When your leader leaves, you don’t just up and quit. What a crock…

for whatever reason I feel like K-State is going to come out ahead of due to Klein being an alum and K-State donors/fans loving him.
Maybe. It was a tough year for them, but Klieman was a solid coach for them. Klein might a great coach for them but he's never been a head coach so its a bit of a gamble.

I cant remember exactly from Covid time, but I think the rule is 40-45 players are required, its in that ball park anyway. That would mean we would need at least half the team leave to not have enough officially. That being said the portal doesnt open until next month, they 100% could and should fulfill their obligation to ISU, to the Fanbase, to the bowl destination, to the conference, and really to their Teammates that want to play, that might be there last chance etc. Sorry, when they took their check they committed to play and have certain obligations or they should give that pay back, which will never happen. The problem is it has become acceptable to sit out, to quit on your team, to hold out for more, to go to the highest bidder. In this situation I guess most would do the same thing I dont necessarily fault them for it, I more fault the overall system, the system that created the atmosphere, the system that made all of this ok and norm. If it was unacceptable from day 1 for everyone this would not be an issue.
Portal opens for players on a team that lost its coach 5 days after new coach is hired.

Still not until January though, unless this is wrong which is very possible, or maybe I just don't understand.

The rules surrounding a coaching change shifted. Whereas before a coaching departure triggered an immediate 30-day window, now players only get a 15-day window if a new hire happens after Jan. 2.

I think he will do well there...smart and like said, beloved. BUT, look how fast they went from a big 12 title to Klieman not being good enough....could happen to him too.

Just another reason why I'll never give a dime to any of this NIL BS.

Imagine being offered a free trip to play a game that 99% of us never got to play again after high school. And instead you decide to take a $500,000 fine. Doesn't sound like the school is in too much trouble financially if we can just eat that amount of money.

Cost me over 2 grand just to go on a 4 day trip last month, worked my ass off to pay for it too. But we're expected to give more...more....more to peoole who dont even want to do their jobs.

Ive heard mixed things on that.

It's not entirely clear to me if the new rules have started so the portal isn't until January, or the new rules don't start at all until January.
at this point I am not sure what rules actually matter anyway.

teams arent supposed to contact players outside the portal, but do, etc.

No one is in control of the ship anymore when it comes to rules in sports. The NCAA has been neutered and its just the wild west anymore.

I think they can contact, just not visit.

Right now the most important thing we should be doing is getting the new staff in place and working to keep players and bring in new players. This is what’s best for the long term health of the program. I love that we are not even thinking about a bowl game. Strategically this was the right move.

I volunteer.

Remember those 1980's Miami Hurricanes teams, prepare to be entertained. I just hope we have someone on the team that can do a backflip in the endzone when we score a TD. And don't expect any touch backs on kickoffs because the celebration penalties after scoring will have us kicking off from our own goal line.
Weird tangent:

As a longtime Hurricanes fan does the name Bryan Fortay mean anything to you?

His story always stuck with me as it seemed like he was treated very unfairly in the media.

What happened to him is a stark reminder of how far athlete rights have come.

Anyway, dumb personal story:

Years ago while visiting my in-laws my wife and I went for a walk through her old neighborhood. She was reminiscing and casually mentioned the kid who lived in one of the houses was a star football player who got some kind of important scholarship.

As you might have guessed if you read this far, it was Bryan Fortay. She couldn’t believe I knew who he was.

He and my wife weren’t really friends as he was a “jock” and popular and she, well, wasn’t. Ironically one of her crew of misfit friends achieved some level of fame as a “fan favorite” contestant on a reality show called “Big Brother”, but I digress…

I know this is meaningless to some and I wasn't even a band member but love the band but I feel for seniors part of the band....bowl trips are super fun them
Ugg…I forgot about the band. I’m really not pleased with our football program right now. This is garbage…a total disregard for our fanbase.

You have to wonder if it ever crossed their minds how excited we got when they got bowl eligible…or how we care when they win or lose in general. Why did they even try so hard over in Ireland? Might as well have just enjoyed the sites over there. They’ve made their whole season mostly meaningless.

It would be interesting to get a national reporter to talk about how crazy it was in the conference room to make bowl selections given all the last minute changes. It seemed like Campbell had already pulled some strings for us to go to a bowl in Phoenix, but it unrvaled this morning. I wonder what other dominoes fell with our opt out.
