*** Official #10 IOWA STATE vs #1 Purdue Game(Day) Thread ***

A couple stat things about Purdue:

They tend to play a slower pace than we have this year. They don't get out and run - even the game at Alabama was only 69 possessions, and Alabama plays at a crazy pace. With a PG like Smith, it'll probably be hard to get them uncomfortable, but if we can get them "sped up" it would definitely be to our advantage.

They don't force many turnovers and don't turn the ball over much.
They also don't get to the FT line much, but keep the other team off the line.

Both things work to our advantage, I think. It's probably not a game where we force 18 turnovers, but if we can get them into double digits it'd be good. And of course we need to limit the unforced turnovers.

Defending Smith in the pick and roll is always the key. I've very curious to see what we try. I think the inclination with our defense would be to try to ice the screen, or hedge really hard with the big - but that tends to get us into scramble situations where we are vulnerable to the corner or weak side 3.

Their bigs (Renn, Cluff and Jacobsen) don't shoot the 3, so that seems like you can play more drop coverage on the pick, and try to trap Smith in the lane.

So much of this game is going to come down to the Milan / Loyer matchup - and I think they will be defending each other. They are similar players too, and the stats are amazingly similar this year. Loyer has gotten to the line a bit more, but Milan has the height advantage and the mid-range/fade away. Lipsey/Smith and Renn/Jefferson are the bigger headline matchups, but Milan/Loyer is the one I'll be watching.
Spot on.

The Milan - Loyer matchup has the most bang for the buck as threes certainly cause high variance in outcomes.

You brought up the slower pace and that is true, it shows their efficiency as they have a top offensive rating.

The Alabama game, they combined to shoot 64 threes.

That is SIXTY-FOUR.

43 for Bama and 21 for Purdue.

It really is the most important stat. That and not allowing them offensive rebounds.

With our doubles and switches, Purdue is an excellent passing team with a Ton of experienced talent. They will get open looks.

Houston slowed the game down with them in the NCAA last year. (Yes I know two different teams) and Houston won 62-60.

I do see us trying to play more aggressive on both sides of the ball because of you try to play them straight up at Mackey Arena, it probably doesn’t end well.

For the Purdue squad - they have 9 guys averaging at least 15 minutes a game so far. Their starters are 4 seniors and a sophomore, then the bench is 3 sophs and a freshman, The tenth guy is a senior transfer from Columbia/North Florida who was hurt and just came back for their last game, so who knows how much he plays.

Starters:
#3 Braden Smith (6'0") - 4 year starting PG, 1st team AA last year, led the conf in assists and steals last year, blah blah blah. I'm sure they'll sing all his accolades on the broadast. Averaging 13ppg and 9 assists this year, shooting 41% from 3.

#2 Fletcher Loyer (6'4") - Another 4 year starter at Purdue, averaging almost 16ppg and shooting 49% from 3 this year. Is 27-28 from the FT line, gets there a lot for mainly a spot up shooter. Previous years he's taken as many 2s as 3s, but he's taken 2.5x as many 3s this year.

#4 Trey Kaufman-Renn (6'9") - Another 4 year player at Purdue - averaged 20 & 6 last year and 15.5 & 11 so far this year. Curiously he shot almost 6 FTs per game last year and only 2 per game so far this year. Missed 2 games in November due to injury. Gets almost 5 offensive boards per game.

#0 CJ Cox (6'3") - Second year player, started part of the year last year. Shoots 39% from 3 on ~3 takes a game. Not a stat sheet stuffer otherwise. Definitely a role player.

#45 Oscar Cluff (6'11") - Only transfer on the list in their main 9 guy rotation; familiar name if you followed offseason portal rumors, he was rumored to be coming to Ames until Purdue offered, then we took Buchanon. He's an Aussie who went to a JUCO, then played a year at Washington State, one at South Dakota St and then to Purdue. He played ISU in the WSU tourney game 2 years ago, scoring 2 points with 2 blocks and 2 turnovers in 15 minutes. Really broke out at SDSU last year, averaging 17 & 12. This year he's averaging 11 & 9 with almost 5 offensive boards a game and shooting over 80% from the FT line

Bench:
#12 Daniel Jacobsen (7'4") - this incredibly tall drink of water is listed as a soph, but I believe redshirted last year - he only played 2 games. He was a teammate of Toure at Brewster Academy (assuming Killyan went there more than 1 year). Averaging 9 & 5 in only 15 minutes a game; I'd guess Pleta will come in to match him.

#17 Omer Mayer (6'4") - Top 100 recruit out of Israel, only freshman in the rotation. 7pts & 2 assists in 16 minutes per game, only 9-31 (29%) from 3 so far

#14 Jack Benter (6'7") - Listed as a soph but didn't play last year. Started the two games Renn was out. 8-18 (44%) from 3.

#24 Gicarri Harris (6'3") - Soph played in all games and started 5 last year, scoring 4ppg. Scoring 5ppg this year; shooting 6-16 (38%) from 3. Maybe considered their backup PG.

Pretty good synopsis here, only things I'd correct or point out:

Loyer: not just a spot up shooter, this year yeah, as teams have had to pack it in a bit but will 100% drive on close outs.

Jacobsen: He did not redshirt but will likely apply and get a med redshirt if he wants. Broke his leg in the first minute of the second game of the year last year. So, essentially a freshman.

Mayer: Mayer is the backup PG. Despite his stats, he's been pretty good this year in a backup PG role. Will play with Smith too.

Benter: He redshirted last year. RS freshman. One of the best shooters on the team and just coming back from injury so not sure how much he'll play.

Harris: Backup 2. Good defender with length. Could see him come in and guard Milan.

The only Boilermaker I'm cheering for today.

Lipsey still out?

If so this isn't going to be pretty.....which im perfectly fine with, West Lafayette and Ames are about the same on the difficulty scale for road teams.
Idk, but having him healthy moving forward through this season is much more important than playing today. If he re-injures himself he could miss conference games. No bueno.
