Matt Campbell has probably signed a non disclosure agreement with PSU and has not not be in a position to speak with most people except for PSU and ISU officials. This prevents leaks to the public (other than all of the speculation and rumors). It will be interesting to learn more about hiring process and new contract terms.
ISU had little time to develop a press release. There will be many questions— interim coach, post season bowl plans, status of recruiting class, head coach search, etc, etc. I am expecting that Jon Heacock will announce his retirement after the end of this season. This alone could be a good reason why Matt Campbell is leaving for PSU especially if he can retain their DC.
Looking back on this, the writing has been on the wall. Ever since Jamie discussed the AD financial challenges at ISU. It was hard to believe that Matt Campbell could be assured of growing success at ISU given the changing CFB landscape and ISU’s limited resources. It seemed strange that he had to take a cut in his compensation to free up more money for his coaching staff. That felt like a short term solution. The recent resignation of Blum from the We Will Foundation also seemed to foreshadow challenges. But maybe it’s just the timing of the resignation.
This is a very sad moment that I always knew would happen. Matt Campbell has been much more loyal and a leader to ISU that most of us can imagine. With that said, I wish Matt Campbell the very best with his future endeavors. I hope he can win a national championship or even a Superbowl someday. He will always go down as my favorite ISU FB coach and made me very proud at how he represented ISU for the past ten years.
