That is how it is now, but not back during Kehres' tenure. And D3 coaches historically (no matter how successful) have not had a lot of chances to move up. They often move around D3 for better opportunities but for whatever reason D3 coaches were labeled a "D3 coach" like it was an illness.
That is how it was then too...there are a few examples of guys moving up...it is a very small number when compared to how many D3 programs there were/are. It does make a bit of sense though...those D3 coaches would be competing for jobs with all of those coaches at higher levels who wanted to move up. I wish it wasn't that way...good coaches are good coaches. Fit certainly matters though but I love cheering for guys who climb the ladder like that! That is how it is now, but not back during Kehres' tenure.
This is more indicative of the current landscape, no doubt. But back in Kehres' heyday, he had numerous times he could have moved up & chose not to.I don't think anyone trusts them to recruit. It's an entirely different ballgame.
I know Chris Winter at Wartburg has been looking to move up the chain and hasn't had any luck getting any traction.
The only jobs I think about Campbell taking is Notre Dame and Ohio State. But I'm not going to worry about something I have zero control over.
I’ve been saying the above on here for years.I’ve heard this from people that know him well personally.
You never know and things change, but that job has been open for awhile now and there has been absolutely no discussion about Campbell until now.
There is Lance Leipold, but he had time as a D-II coordinator before becoming HC at Wisconsin Whitewater.yeah a head D3 coach usually comes up as an offensive line coach at the d1 level or a linebacker coach. That is the way they get promoted to D1. Not straight to head coach
That is interesting. Based on nothing more than his public persona both seem like poor fits.I’ve been saying the above on here for years.
These posts are very very accurate.
Assuming you’re referring to OSU and ND.That is interesting. Based on nothing more than his public persona both seem like poor fits.
I never said he would ever even be offered those jobs. He would certainly fit better at ND IMO. Ohio State is a different style. That is interesting. Based on nothing more than his public persona both seem like poor fits.
Assuming you’re referring to OSU and ND.
I disagree on ND. That’s like Matt’s perfect scenario. Midwest school. Resources to win. Academic prowess that aligns perfectly with his culture first mentality. He and Freeman are alike in a lot of ways. And by the way ND has a top 5 class this year.
He has us close to 9 wins this year. He had us 10-2 this time last year. Last year ND is in the playoff conversation with that record. They got to keep all $20M in CFP money last year; no pesky conference mates to pay out.
I could see Matt jumping at that opportunity and thriving there.
I tend to agree with this vision. Just throw out all CFB history prior to about 2020 or so. NIL changes, conference realignments and meltdowns, dismantling the NCAA, all recent events point to CFB at large turning into a massive arms race where it's win at all costs, or die. Relevance is tied to competing for titles for teams trying to get near the blue blood club instead of linger with 6-6 mediocrity every year. The past is not an accurate indicator of future behavior in the current landscape of college athletics. They have wild expectations, and the resources to match. In in their minds, they feel it is a birthright to win the national championship. In this microwave environment, that combination will lead to hasty decisions.
I agree with this, generally, but the fact of the matter is if ND or OSU is Campbell's "dream job," it's incredibly unlikely he would be considered for either of those jobs unless he makes an intermediate move at this point. The only jobs I think about Campbell taking is Notre Dame and Ohio State. But I'm not going to worry about something I have zero control over.
I’m actually more worried about JP leaving and taking CMC and OTZ with him.If a job doesn't have somebody like JP as his potential boss I'd be shocked if he took it. There are very few AD's like JP and everything about how the Penn State search has gone down points toward the opposite.
CMC would be smart to use this opportunity as others have to secure further commitments for his players even if he has no interest in another dollar for himself.
How about him ending up at Mt. Union? Perfect situation, close to where he grew up, fun times teaching young men, great culture and football history. He's already made his millions, doesn't need the big bucks.I think Campbell only leaves for ND, Ohio State, or Michigan. Otherwise... I think we have him as long as we can keep him.
Earl Bruce and Donnie Duncancan't blame em if he's ready for something new. I lived through Mac, gene, rhoads. CMC has been a super success. we all got our monies worth.
