Matt Campbell to Penn State??

I could see Campbell going after next year as he will have lots of kids leaving and it's a pretty big rebuild

Will see...
This is my thought too. Especially with Rocco returning. Even though he struggled much of this year, Campbell loves him. Win the bowl game and Rocco will have won 20 starts over the last 2 years. I am more concerned about Campbell’s status after next year.

They just fired a coach mid-season after he took them to the college playoffs. This landscape of college football and NIL/Donations has changed and coaches at schools like Penn St are obviously on shorter leashes or else they would have at least waited until the end of the season to fie him.
Giving a coach 11 years is not a short leash. This was a long time coming with his in about to win big games and they still stuck with him.

It wasn’t even the loss to Oregon this year that did him in it was going out and getting throttled by UCLA. At that point you have to get rid of him

Firing him 5 games after making the playoffs is. You can talk about how long he was there all you want. What matters is what he has done lately and thats the new college landscape.

Also, I see your posts and you come here like some GD expert. Are the Spartan boards that lame?

How did he get to those playoffs? It wasn’t by beating good teams it was the same record and performance they have every year only the playoffs expanded. That’s the point and why he was fired post UCLA, they have to move on after 11 seasons. Again, 11 seasons which is a longer run then just about everyone currently coaching. Heck it’s longer than anyone has coached in ISU, history.

To the last part, came over for realignment talk and stayed because it’s a great forum for general talk. The best Michigan board only allows Michigan talk and the best Sparty board got destroyed by sports nation and the current best one really just focuses on Sparty sports. CF is almost like a mini Reddit

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

I totally agree this is a reasonable perspective.

I also think NIL and the portal make firing a coach mid season much more excusable.

Penn State could reasonably be seen as the most patient, stable top-tier “P2” job there is. If there is any school that resists the current trend and retains a traditional stable program model PSU seems the most likely candidate.

Without being privy to the inner workings we’re not likely to know for a few years.

However, if they hire Campbell I’d be inclined to bet he is there for a long, long time.

Edit: Your handle makes me want to stop for ice cream.

This isn't 2015. How many of ISU's current roster would go with him?

I don't think he's leaving but if he does it's actually better for him that they don't have a ton of guys coming in that he didn't recruit. He can ask his current players to go with him to bridge the gap and some of them likely would.
Good luck with that with that fanbase. Already being their 8th option and telling your fans "I'm bringing my middle-of-the-pack Big 12 roster with me"?

I’m surprised nobody is bringing up that sweet Ames water as a factor.

Campbell left Toledo after 7 years. He may be a lifer at ISU, he may leave. If he wants somewhere stable he can compete for national titles then where would be better than PSU?
I think Campbell would be a good cultural fit for PSU, but he's a good cultural fit for ISU. I don't know what he would do if they came calling. If he went, I'd be happy to see him succeed. He's got a good thing here in Ames so it's not a slam dunk that would be better.

It's interesting as with the new NIL/college sports models, this past year we heard a lot of "coaching contracts will have to change" or whatever moving forward...but it doesn't appear they are...still seem to be extremely advantageous to the coach and not institutions.

Most of the best recruits are already locked up. He could have some success in the portal. Rome wasn't built in a day.

And D3 coaches historically (no matter how successful) have not had a lot of chances to move up. They often move around D3 for better opportunities but for whatever reason D3 coaches were labeled a "D3 coach" like it was an illness.

yeah a head D3 coach usually comes up as an offensive line coach at the d1 level or a linebacker coach. That is the way they get promoted to D1. Not straight to head coach

Jason Scheer tweeted there was some smoke with Campbell last night as well.

My Bama friend is convinced DeBoer is taking it Sunday after they get beat by Georgia again.

Then we get Lane trying to back out of LSU and the **** show that's going to be.
I would love to see that.

Totally agree and I think Matt would do well. But you also have to realize we are talking about tens of millions on NIL funds, and a program that just fired their coach who was in the CFB semifinals last year for having a losing streak.

Matt's comfort zone seems to be finding quality kids, building them up and then retaining the ones that become key contributors. That's not the way it goes with the blue bloods. You've got to win high school recruiting. You've got to win the portal. You've got to keep your key players. And oh yah, you better make the playoff every year. No pressure.

Thats one coach though. It's almost impossible to find a bunch of coaches that did that. Most of them move on to the next biggest gig.
Do you think Campbell was influenced by Kehres at all? Of course he was, that's my point.
'Most' coaches move in to the next biggest gig. Campbell is not like 'most' coaches, as was Kehres.
