Matt Campbell to Penn State??

The Big Ten is very lucky to have Indiana come up out of nowhere with Cignetti. Michigan hasn't been the same since Harbaugh left and USC has never made the CFP. When Penn State is down like this, that would have left just Ohio State and Oregon as the two big dogs. If not for Indiana, I don't think we would be looking at the Big Ten as being very good. In fact, the bottom of that conference is bad enough as it is.

If you're talking big picture and try to reduce recency bias college football has these tiers:

1
Ohio St., Alabama, Oklahoma

2
Michigan, Notre Dame, USC, Texas, Nebraska (is moving closer to 3)

3
Penn St., Georgia, LSU, Florida, FSU, Miami, Auburn, Tennessee

4
UCLA, Clemson, Texas A&M, Washington, Michigan St., Wisconsin, Arkansas, Oregon (is moving their way in)

Now if you talk strictly the last 25 years or some other time frame it would look different.

They aren’t a blue blood, both Wisconsin and MSU have more conference championships in the last 20 years then Penn state does.

They are Iowa with much better talent. They beat up on the teams they are supposed to and lose every big game. This keeps them ranked highly and they bring in awesome recurring classes to get good buzz but they aren’t a blue blood.
Using that metric, you’re saying Nebraska is not a blue blood either then

Not that I think CMC goes anywhere. But lets just play that game. Who do we go after if it happens?

Scheelhaase? That one seems like a probability, considering the history, and how he appears to be doing with the Rams.

I dont know who else from there with all the moves already happening it seems like a very picked over list at this point.
Why not use the formula that worked before?

Pollard will hire the relatively inexperienced coach that defeated the Cyclones this season in a game ISU should have won easily.

This thread is exactly why CMC has stayed at Iowa State.

He has always viewed 99% of the “other jobs” as a lateral move at best.

The short leashes of these programs always trying to keep up with the Jones’ and a rat race. Firing really good coaches when the program needs them the most.

Now Penn State finds itself believing they can hire away anyone when it’s proven they can’t. This isn’t your Grandpa’s Penn State.

The craziness keeps escalating, coaches getting fired after a couple of seasons…..which bodes well for CMC staying the course.

Go Cyclones!

Blue bloods are terribly afraid to go the path that Jamie Did. Choose a guy who was taught by one of the most brilliant minds in football and then cut his teeth in the MAC. Nebby found their guy in a similar way in 1962 and it worked out OK for them. But boosters wouldn’t allow Nebby to do that now or any other so-called big name program.

Look at Cignetti. Learned under Saban, dropped down levels to become a coach, won a bunch, and now has Indiana in the playoff. Indiana. Who has been playing football longer than Iowa State yet has 40 less wins.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Cignetti win the Big 10. All at the same time of Penn States dumpster fire coaching search.

Cig is from PA and went to WVU, yet PSU and WVU effed around too much. I bet there is only one job he'll take now and that's the one that DeBoer currently has.

Notre Dame hired Kelly straight from cinci, Michigan hired Brady hoke from SDSU, Ohio state hired Jim tressel from Youngstown state.

This kind of hiring happens all the time if it isn’t an internal guy

They don't. They're on the next rung down, which is still good teams, but they're not on the blue blood level as much as the big 10 would like them to be. The blue bloods are that top right corner, with Nebraska slowly slipping towards the back edge of that over the last decade+

Don't really give a **** about Pedo State's coaching search but enjoyed finally finding the bottom of the block I sticking out under Tulane

I doubt if OSU would hire a 1 aa coach today.

Chip Kelly was recently canned by the Raiders. Kinda surprised his name hasn't been floated more for some of these jobs. Or maybe they go after Brady in Buffalo? Regardless, they need a name-brand coach to sell their fans. Another up-and-comer like Campbell will cause a revolt in Happy Valley.

It happens but not very often. And of your example Kelly being the most recent was 15 years ago. The landscape has changed a lot in the last 15 years. Boosters with lots of cash have become way more powerful today as now they are funding everything from facilities to buying players through so called NIL deals.
