Most of these excuses are dumb but @herbicide has a pretty valid use case I think. If we're talking personal vehicles the 2% of the population that spends that much windshield time and the people who don't have access to an outlet where they park at night I think are still better off sticking to a gas engine. Commercial vehicles kind of muddy the water too, I can see arguments both ways unless you're in a 3/4 ton truck and actually pulling something over 100 miles a day on a regular basis.

I told him I don't think an EV is for him right now. I would probably get a fuel efficient gas car if I was paying that much of my own money for 8x a month 500 mile road trips.

I'm trying to politely point out nobody even needs or expects 600 mile minimum range in a gas car in all conditions so why make this kind of absurd barrier for EV tech. It's just fear and misinformation at some point, or it's setting up needing some insane amount of range when really charger availability and speed is the area to improve.

I get that where you are and what you do it's not ideal for you.

I am skeptical you really need 600 miles of true range in any vehicle and it sounds like we agree.

When you say you need that 600 mile range in an EV (your quote above), but don't even use it or expect it in a gas car, it adds to the fear and misinformation.

You probably actually need better charging infrastructure in some of these areas and slightly faster charging times more than you really need 600 miles of range, which means 800 miles of range in optimal conditions.

I also think that almost nobody realizes how inconvenient gas stations are in daily life until they charge at home, even a PHEV you can get gas like once every 3 months and you start to realize it's a needless chore. I'm somebody who has wanted electric cars since the 90s and I didn't even fully realize it until I had a PHEV that it was such a hassle to go get gas when pumping gas went from every week thing to every few months thing.
No we don't agree...

Sure you're technically right that I don't "need" that range, as I could always stretch the day longer or spend a night in a hotel. But what I "desire" isn't available with current infrastructure and technology.

What are you 'skeptical' about? That its ~600 miles round trip from Ankeny to Chicago, and is ~10 hours of drive time? That the amount of fast charging stations is sparse in rural areas?

On my end this is all about the amount of time in one day, and my tolerance for how much driving/working I can do in one day.

TLDR:
Right now a gas vehicle doesn't add extra time to that day in comparison to the current EV offerings. An EV with a true 600mi range completely negates that issue for my use case. That is why I keep saying a 600mi range; at that point there is zero advantage to me that an ICE has over EV...

Chicago to Ankeny and back is a breeze with EVs. Tons of charging available.

Yes... how much time does that add to a round trip?

(Bad example, probably should have used Madison NE (not Madison WI.. :D )
If you park in a parking garage with a charger when in Chicago, you could probably get by with one 20 minute stop each way in Bettendorf. Enough time to hit the bathroom and get some food.

Again, how much time? And I certainly haven't seen many on my stops between here and there; once off i80...

I see on the map there are some in Norfolk (out of way) and Blair.
You car tells you where and when, and there are more than you think. You're not just going to see them driving by.

But again, I get your situation isn't ideal for an EV. It would add an hour. Still wouldn't make me stay overnight anywhere, but if you don't want that extra hour, makes sense to stick with ICE, as I said before.

I will be parking at the client(s), where there are no chargers...

Everytime I stop for fuel I look to see if there are chargers available...

That's not where most of them are dude....

This goes back to someone not understanding, but acting like they do.
Ok, so now I have to stop one place to charge, and one place to 'rest' and get a snack/lunch?

Or what am I missing oh wiser than everyone here?

Seriously the smugness is very irritating. You all are just begging for trolls to beat down.

I beg you to search my history on this very thread.

Here's an example with a Tesla Model 3 LR RWD. 27 extra mins of charging. Boy, that would just be the WORST lol. Screenshot 2025-12-03 140720.png

Right now a Ram 1500; 20-23mpg, 25 gal tank.

I hope these guys arguing with me aren't in the EV business because they are having the opposite effect of their intent...
No one's forcing you to continue posting in a thread that's all about EVs..

You're now proving our point that you indeed are a troll lol.

They can be anywhere from your typical Casey's, to a mall, do a rest stop, to a Culvers, to a Taco Bell, and on and on and on. They are always placed by some businesses.

They just aren't mostly at a typical gas station.
