NFL: Kansas City Chiefs Thread

Denver is down their starting RB and ran it nearly 35% of the time. They have been running it 42% of the time this season.

Chiefs are running it 40% of the time this season, and only ran 22% today. The last time the Chiefs ran the ball today was with 12:11 left in the game. They never ran the ball when they got the lead.

To be fair there were a ton of penalties putting them behind the sticks. I’m sure that effected their ability to run.

No explosiveness at the RB position hurts so bad. There are good holes this year and Hunt can hit them but cannot break away. Mahomes has not been good either. Should have of 2 tds on the first 3 plays over throwing Thornton and Worthy. He locks on to 1 receiver too much.

Play calling has been atrocious. Need some fresh blood on the coaching staff. Andy talks about getting the run game going then abandons it. The NFL meta is moving away from pass happy teams as defenses have caught up.

Defensive line had been subpar too. Jones is old, Karlaftis is good but not great.

All in all tho, it’s been a heck of a 10 year run for Reid and the Chiefs so cannot complain too much. The league always catches up.

The statistics show this team runs the ball fine. Why don't you understand that Reid just doesn't want to run the ball? This isn't hard dude. They are fine at running back. You're ******* insane if you don't think only running the ball 14 times today hurt this team. I'll take 4.5 ypc any day of the week. Keep telling yourself that if we would have got Breece Hall all of a sudden Andy would run it 40 times. Not happening. This is what this team does and it doesn't matter who's in the backfield. You keep acting like Hunt got bottled up all day. The backs have played pretty well all year.
Why don't you understand that we have a generational QB, and a very talented WR core. Most coaches would be running only to keep the defense honest. You keep thinking we are a running team, which are not, none of our backs are anymore than average at best.
I have not looked it up, but we did not win super bowls as a running team, we won them by Mahomes throwing the ball first and foremost. Its really simple, should we have run the ball today more, I have not clue, but running it more would not guarantee we win today.

I totally understand what we have at QB. That doesn't mean you can be predictable and completely abandon one aspect of offense. Especially when the line has problems pass blocking. We need to run the ball(even if it's not effective) to open up the passing game. The kicker of this all is this team does run the ball well when we commit to it. Going by your take, and thats we have a generational talent at QB so we don't need to run,I'm not sure what the hell bringing in Hall or another RB would have mattered anyway. And you watch these games every week. Andy is a great play designer and has the ability to make adjustments as well as anyone who's ever worn a headset. He doesn't always have the best gameplans though. He didn't in Philly either. He has a tendency to get impatient and throw the run game in the trash way too fast even if it's getting 5yards per attempt.

You are right, screw Mahomes and the receiver core, lets run the ball about 75% of the time and showcase Hunt and Pacheo, wear them down, we can become the Squawks of the NFL.

No let's make a commitment to running the ball so at the very least the defense knows there's a possibility we might do that. Then run more PA passes off that. The playcalling and especially the situational playcalling has been awful dude. Having a all-pro back you won't give the ball to anyway isn't helping this team. To constantly be out of the shotgun and run the same routes every ******* play clearly isn't working. It was a problem last year too. You can't be as predictable as KC is on offense and move the ball. Sometimes slow and methodical drives work really well. Its pretty easy to double a WR with a S or Kelce with a LB if they know there is no chance we are running. This team is obviously better at passing but the running game still has to set the stage for the passing game. This isn't the Tyreke Hill and young Kelce offense of 5 years ago

Think it's 50/50 if we make Playoffs especially considering we don't have many tiebreaker. Realistically to feel safe I think chiefs need to go 6-1 to finish the season.
The good news is we have the ability to win out. The bad news is it seems like some of this team has mentally checked out. Sunday is the season. I disagree with a lot of peoples assessment that this is a personel problem. Its been a game plan problem. This team should be 8-2. Ditching the run game has cost them 3 or 4 games. Jacksonville was another one. Andy is a play designing genius, he isn't always a playcalling genius

On paper, the roster looks good enough and the schedule looks favorable enough to go 6-1 then make a run in the playoffs. But I also haven't seen anything from this team on the actual field to back it up. I thought the Denver game was the flip the switch and prove it game, and they certainly didn't do that.

Honestly I'm not sure. Sometimes the running game is completely ineffective but yesterday I would agree, needed to be more balanced. It's probably game by game on what gameplan should be. It doesn't help to be able to run though when Taylor and rest of line is getting us In 1st or 2nd in long. This team right now commits way too many stupid penalties. Other thing for me that can and needs to be improved is 3rd down defense. Seems like for weeks it's 50 50 if we get off the field. They said Denver is allowinc 28 percent for the year. A lot of the conversions yesterday for Denver were 3rd and long. So you're giving up a big chunk and that can be demoralizing. Maybe you rest Jones more on early downs in hopes he can disrupt 3rd down. Yesterday was his best game in long time so hopefully that continues

It's tough since this appears to be a very talented team on paper. If we can sneak into a WC slot, guarantee no one wants to play us.

Have to remember that no one has played even close to the number of games the Chiefs have played the last seven years. And no one has played more first place schedules than the Chiefs. They are probably a little mentally and physically worn down. Maybe a year off would not be terrible. Reset the gang and get that turd Taylor off the team. But would be a shame to have Kelce go out with no playoffs.

You're off your rocker. No one is even saying to run it a majority of the time, but running it 23% of the time yesterday was bad. Chiefs offense was completely predictable against a really good defense in crunch time yesterday.

Even when the run game isn't getting us the ypc we want we can't abandon it. Statistically this backfield is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be though. We could win a Superbowl with a healthy Pacheco and Kareem Hunt as our backs. When the defense knows you aren't gonna run and are looking for a short route to Kelce and only something deep to Rice or Worthy the Chiefs are ******. We weren't even going with RPO plays yesterday.

Taylor has been frustrating. He looked like Taylor from last year on Sunday. And although he has made some bonehead penalties all year he's actually been pretty good when he isn't committing penalties. They can't afford to just sit him out because he has been the Taylor we played for some of this year. 50% of snaps this year he's been really good. He's clearly better on the right side. Like you say though we just commit way too many stupid penalties and can't do anything well consistently.

I was being sarcastic, you cannot look at one game and determine anything, if we had won yesterday, no one would be saying a damn thing about the number of times we ran the ball. But after a loss people are going to nit pick. We lost yesterday because Mahomes was off most of the game, maybe that will be good for the team the rest of the year.

That's not true either. People have been calling to run the ball more all season. Sports radio down in KC would have gone off only running it 14 times, regardless if they won.

Also, Mahomes has been off all season, which is why people want to run more.

Then maybe those people on the sports radio in KC should take up coaching and move Andy into retirement. Sometimes a season does not go as you had planned, this year for KC is one of the those seasons. The team is not making the plays like it has in the past, and they are now getting beat. Running Hunt and Pacheo 35 times a game is not going to change that outcome. Neither back is a game breaker, solid NFL backs and nothing more and neither would be the featured back on any good teams in the league.
It's not like they have not had plenty of opportunities to run the ball and neither has broken off a long run this entire year. It's another reason they should have gone out and gotten Hall when they had the chance.

Again, I don't think anyone is asking to run it a majority of the time. I think on the season its been about the right balance. Sunday, it was not, and Andy called a very predictable 4th Quarter. I think it is silly to think that if the Chiefs ran it more in the 4th quarter, they would not have won. They gained -3 yards of offense on two drives after getting the lead with 10 minutes left in the game. They had a 3rd and 2 with a 3 point lead and a little under 7 minutes left in the game and called a pass play. It is 100% appropriate to question why the Chiefs didn't run more on Sunday.

Would you be asking the question if they had picked up the 3rd and 2 yards? It's easy to sit back and say "they should have run the ball there" when it does not work. If it had worked, no one would have said a thing. I will agree 14 runs in a game is most likely not enough, but it does happen.

The thing that worries me is that both Denver and Buffalo have figured out rush four, keep the outside rushers outside and keep Mahomes in the pocket, blitz every now and then, but drop everyone into coverage when possible. The Chiefs need to come up with a way to combat what both teams have done to them. They tried to throw downfield on Sunday, but Mahomes was off and missed on most of those throws, that to me is a bigger problem than getting Hunt more touches.

Yes...I said it the second they didnt hand the ball off. It was a bad call there.
