This is depressing... :(

Unless I am mistaken, doesn’t Iowa also offer more sports than we do, for example, baseball. So they have more expenditures. The real comparison would be budget for each sport.

Iowa laid off most their part time athletic staffers and cut their budget for student staff as well last year. Their football equipment staff got cut by half because of rev sharing. They don’t have the 20.5 budgeted out either.
I would agree that EIU may be trouble coming up with the athletes money, but they are still in better shape than ISU will be going forward of being able to afford it. ISU has two years worth of saving built up to cover the funds, what happens after that point is anyones guess, but right now we are living on borrowed time, while the payments to the B10 will continue to increase until the end of the contract. Unless the B12 can come up with a way to bring in more money for the league members, its not going to be possible to continue to make the athletic payment every year and that number will go up as we move down the road.

CyTown will cover it after our reserves dry up, no need to worry.

I agree they are in better shape financially but you said they would have no problem coming up with 20.5 and would have money to spare. That just isn’t true. Plus they still owe the University a ton of money and have to pay Fran’s buyout.

They’re in better shape long term so long as they stay in the B1G. The day is going to come that Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State scream more, then look at the Northwesterns, Perdue’s and Iowa’s of the conference and say “you haven’t pulled your share of the weight lately in terms of viewers/being competitive so now you’ll take 5% of what you’re getting now, or we’re kicking you out of the conference”, or they’ll just kick them out of the conference without offering unequal revenue sharing

Iowa underperforms SO much for the amount of money they get.

They have no business getting beat regularly by lowly ISU. Has to be so frustrating for their fans.

Not hyperbole here but amid "power" athletic programs...

I'm not sure anybody does more with less than Iowa State.

And nobody does less with more than Iowa.

Asking for a friend: Does that athletic revenue number include the loan it got from the academic side?

Would your rather be in their situation or ours? They have the money pledged to come in off their media deal, we do not. They are supporting more sports, and have been building up their facilities but they will be fine over east, ISU is not nearly in the same boat, as we are not going to be getting the money they are from their media deal.
Pollard stated we used our reserves to cover the $20 million this year, and will be forced to do it again next year, what happens after that, the reserves are now spent and we will have to come up with another $20 million?

We can all laugh and talk about the money problems of EIU, but there is not a Cyclone fan out there that would not change places with them today money wise. The B10 media deal will increase in payments far greater and faster than the B12 deal will. The buyout of Fran was not that much and from what I read was covered by boosters to get rid of him and they will make it back up quickly on ticket sells this year.

Can ISU somehow be the benefactor of another Hok lawsuit? That could help for at least a few years.

They make bad investments in paying millions to QBs who can’t pass consistently. Maybe they’ll finally stop that and try to develop someone.
The longer they "develop" quarterbacks, the worse they get. Their best bet is to get short term contracts with quarterbacks developed at other schools, and dump them before the coaches rub off on them too much.

Until the Big 10 goes to unequal media revenue sharing and they start to move closer to us in revenue and not farther away. Or if they don't get the post Kirk hire right and they go through something like Wisconsin has been recently. There is more unknown than known when it comes to revenue 5 or 10 years from now in college athletics.

Sure we would all like to be in the Big 10 right now and get the media revenue that comes along with it. But it is a long ways from the scenario they like to paint where they are close to Ohio St. in revenue and we will be closer to UNI.

I dont control any of this so I am not going lose my mind about it. Whatever happens will happen.
