high school football: Coach averaging 11 wins per season resigns after threats from parents

Absolutely ridiculous. I hope they lose every game the rest of the year. Parents won't discipline their own kids, the coach applies some discipline, and the parents flip out. I really can't believe the school administrators sided with the parents as well.

I'm actually a little shocked you don't hear about things like this more often. Maybe it just doesn't make the news.

I would have been shocked if the admin supported the coach.

the story mentions that the coach and assistant (coaches dad) were suspended because the players sat longer than they were told. I wouldn't be surprised if there is more to this story and we were only hearing the coaches side. If a coach benches a player due to disciplinary reasons, that shouldn't be something to get suspended over.

It's very possible but wouldn't shock me if that's all it was.

I saw a teacher get put on leave for breaking up a fist fight, getting between the kids and one falling over after hitting the teacher, meanwhile the parent got to come to the 5th grade 'graduation' a few weeks later and start spouting off at the teacher and principal while district officials just stood there and only directed the teacher to go inside.

This is what I was thinking . By no means am I supporting the reaction by the parents but the story is lacking in any details of the circumstances of the suspension. Maybe the coaches reason and subsequent decision to suspend players was over the top and unwarranted. Can't really know that without more information.

Way I see it, there is no need for more detail. Coach can make the call to suspend a kid regardless if the kid or their family feels it's unwarranted. Benching a kid for unsportsmanlike conduct is a great teaching moment. If it was only for a half and then you're dominating the game without them and decide to keep them out longer, good for you coach.

Parents are out of control in sports at ALL levels. People absolutely embarrass themselves constantly all the way down to freaking 5 year sports. Good on the coach for standing up to that and saying to hell with them.

We're talking about playing time in a high school football game. Coach decides who plays. Never should have escalated beyond that. Threats on any level and an administration that doesn't appear to have my back? I'd have resigned too.

Could be more to it, or it could be that this has already well exceeded a reasonable threshold of foolishness for a high school football program. Different world than most of us grew up in.

HAS TO be more to the story, right?

A real AD and school should shut the season down for that type of behavior by fans.

Don't disagree with most of what your saying but there must be some reason the administration agreed with the parents. Now if it was a bunch of rich kids parents putting the heat on the administration to side with the kids that would be ******** but the story is sorely lacking in detail so I just think its hard to draw conclusions about what happened.

I'm always disappointed that names aren't named. Surely some threats were made publicly. What's more, the district should file assault charges against anyone threatening their staff in any manner. It's unacceptable and should be board policy.

90's -Friend of mine took over an 0-12 football team. First year they went 6-6. The next year after having the players in summer workouts for a year they won 12 games and a state title. Two parents of self entitled slacker players who sometimes came to lifting and didn't work hard enough to earn PT got him fired. It has been happening forever in HS sports.

Or if the kid is reacting poorly to the suspension grousing on the bench and being an ass to teammates I wouldn't send them in the game even though they served their suspension.

There's always been weirdness from parents but it's been a full on epidemic for the last several years.

The same goes for admin siding with parents.

The show “English Teacher” on FX uses this as villain of the series.

After karate my oldest went over and shook the instructor's hand. Unprompted.

Gave me a little hope for the future.

The instructors are firm with the kids. They hold a blunt accountability in class and the kids respond to it.

(Of course he was also planning to punch an award winning black belt instructor "in the nuts" too. So it's a WIP)
