Annual Halloween Candy Rant

We're usually sitting outside on our driveway around a firepit when we hand out candy. A big hit for the parents walking their kids around is our 'candy' bowl of mini liquor bottles. We've also done jello shots and random drinks/shots.

We've gotten accustomed to having kids get sent up the street and back while the adults hang with us awhile.

For the first time in several decades I ate some M&Ms. Now, everyone old enough questions whether their senses have aged and if that's the reason things taste, sound, or smell differently. But, I was so dismayed about the M&Ms that I did some digging. Only to learn they changed their recipe and added more crap to increase their margins. There needs to be a movement to go back to cane sugar, dark chocolate, and fewer preservatives. Heck, I'd be ok paying a tad more if Mars created "M&Ms Classic".
They had to make up for the sales they lost when Green M&M traded her stilleto boots for New Balance sneakers.

We have quite a few homes give full sized bars.

I'm not jumping into that arms race. We put out snacks. Chips. Granola stuff. Rice Crispy treats

Always cleaned out.

No chance I'm putting a goddam weapon (ie potato) out there. Don't need one coming through my window with a note tied to it.
That's what you get for living in Chiraq. ;)
Or the nearby gentrified suburb.

I ordered our candy today from Amazon, will be here Sunday. Last year we set up a table and a couple of chairs in the garage and was giving out candy for a good 90 minutes. Towards the end, it was take 3 or 4, because I was told not to have any left over. Wife was on a diet.

I think my wife is planning on giving out full size candy bars this year. The bags of smaller bars/candies keep getting smaller and more expensive. In the past she has given out multiples of the smaller bars/candies anyway. I just don’t ask how much she spends and she doesn’t tell. She really enjoys handing out the treats to the kids.
Any idea how many Trick or Treaters you get? We get well over 100 every year.

I honestly don't feel like handing out candy this year. Just a lot of factors. Candy getting expensive. We always end up with a lot leftover. I've never taken my daughter trick-or-treating. It has always been my wife who goes with her while I stay home to hand out candy.

I feel like the dynamic should be that younger families go out trick or treating with their kids. As their kids get older, they then should stay home to hand out candy. Don’t miss the moments in your kids lives, but we need someone to hand out candy and that falls on those that benefitted from years of trick or treating with their kids.

Approximately 130-150 each year. It used to be more, but numbers have been down recently.
We are one of the go to neighborhoods for kids in some of the big apartment complexes across town. Glad we can provide a safe environment for kids to trick or treat. It is kind of funny some of the non-English speaking grandmas that don't get the concept that it is for the kids. We give grandma candy anyway.

We are the same. The “nice” neighborhood in our town. Lots people. Different ages and different backgrounds. My wife loves trick or treat night.

Ours isn't THE nicest neighborhood, but a nice mix of pretty nice, enough youth and diversity that everyone seems comfortable coming here with a van load.

Any homes for sale on your block?

We haven't taken our daughters trick or treating for many years, I love staying home and handing out to trick or treaters. Every Halloween I get a couple pots of chili going on the stove, one red and one white bean, and we'll dish some out in to-go cups for our neighbors/friends/family members with kids who come by. It's a bigger hit when it's colder out, obviously.

Every halloween, after my kids go to bed, I dump their candy out and pick out all the Butterfingers and Almond Joys. There's no reason my kids need to enjoy those, I can do that all by myself. Part of me is also sad my children will never get to try a Butterfinger, but I guess that's the price you pay.

Went to Walmart and Target to get Halloween candy (for the kids). Where’s the 100 Grand bars? Everything is Reese’s and Skittles. While I do love me some Reese’s cups, I need variety. There was almost no caramel options at all.

Im thinking a class action lawsuit or anti-trust case would bring Halloween back to reality. Who’s signing up with me?
Just buy whatever for the kids and a smaller bag of what you like for yourself?

I like your thinking. You had me at Almond Joy.
