Annual Halloween Candy Rant

Saw online somewhere-

To Be Funny, a Guy put a Potato in the Candy Bowl for Trick-or-Treaters.

1st Group, a kid took the Potato (odd).

He tosses another Potato in the Candy bowl.
3rd Group up, another Kid takes the Potato.

By the end of the Night, they had gone through a 10lb bag of Potatoes

Kids do the damnedest things!!!!

I'm sure the parents were going through the Kids bags, and were like WTF?

"hey Mom, turn on the oven, Baked Potato Night"......

For the first time in several decades I ate some M&Ms. Now, everyone old enough questions whether their senses have aged and if that's the reason things taste, sound, or smell differently. But, I was so dismayed about the M&Ms that I did some digging. Only to learn they changed their recipe and added more crap to increase their margins. There needs to be a movement to go back to cane sugar, dark chocolate, and fewer preservatives. Heck, I'd be ok paying a tad more if Mars created "M&Ms Classic".

Dark chocolate?

We've been doing full-size the past several years, usually buy a few boxes of assorted from Costco, then supplement with fun-size packs of some non-chocolate/peanut varieties.

Something else that has been a lot of fun is adding a potato to our bowl of candy. We just put one plain potato on top of the candy before each group of kids come, you'd be shocked how many of them pick the potato over all the candy. Saw it on tiktok a few years ago, and now we're known as the 'potato house'.

Same here, if I'm going to take the time to give out candy, it's going to be full size candy bars. Even living in what seems like a high kid neighborhood, it's been under 100 candy bars the past 2 years. I always plan for more though :p

I've noticed taking the kids out over the last few years that the price of candy is really diminishing the amount of people handing it out. It seems like there are less and houses with their lights on each year.

Wife got several assortment bags. How many you get depends on how much you irritated her in school (she’s a teacher). She does have 100 grand in them. I always steal a few out the night before.

Last year we had a doucher walking around yapping about the election. I told him whoever you’re for, I’m voting opposite just for being a douche on the night for kids. Thankfully it’s just municipal year this year and no one goes around for that.

We've been in our house for 15 years now. We had well over 100 kids for the first few year, maybe 150. Last year was under 40.

Damn Gen Z being too lazy to walk around for free candy? :jimlad:

We're hosting a Halloween party this year once trick or treating has wrapped up. My wife wants it to be a quiet, quaint, gathering. I believe it will devolve into a night of spooky haunts and horrors, but mostly a lot of drinking.

The last few years we have been getting the 60 packs of Rice Krispie Treats from Costco (usually around $10-12 per pack) for our Trick or Treaters. A little different from the typical chocolate or fruit flavored candy and helps avoid any allergy concerns. We have gotten lots of comments like "Oooh I love these" "I was hoping you'd have these again this year" etc.

When we built we were about the only ones under 75 in our area, so it was thin. Now we are kinda in the middle and with more houses going up have become a higher hit area for our town. Went from about 10 kids to about 100 over the years.

It's always more fun when you're giving out candy and seeing lots of activity. Just makes a neighborhood feel alive.

We don't really get trick or treaters but I notice the candy around for sale...why is a bag of halloween candy $26 one place and $10-12 somewhere else and they seem like the same size? Is it just me or has it gotten astronomically expensive? I feel like you could grab the 2-for deal of full size candy bars at Target or Wal Mart and get a way better deal.

Yes, it's stupid expensive and an uber rip-off. The approx 10 oz +/- size of Kit Kats, Snickers, Reeses etc are usually $6-7 now. My grocery, which I shop because it's convenient and has all of my stuff, is usually $7 for those bags but had some odd charity benefit sale a week of so ago for the same bags for $3 so I stocked up. They were the cool stuff too, Kit Kat shaped like Dracula and Reese's shaped like pumpkins etc. And so far I haven't been eating TOO many myself.

Went to Walmart and Target to get Halloween candy (for the kids). Where’s the 100 Grand bars? Everything is Reese’s and Skittles. While I do love me some Reese’s cups, I need variety. There was almost no caramel options at all.

Im thinking a class action lawsuit or anti-trust case would bring Halloween back to reality. Who’s signing up with me?
I don't pay much attention since we are confident that we will only have three kids come by this year. Our 2-year-old grandson is gonna be a piglet, and I'm sure our neighbor will bring their two grandkids by on the way to town. Since it's Friday, they probably will have them during the day. There won't be anyone walking or driving down the gravel road or our long lane, but I’ll still sign up. I like the 1000 Grand, but I love Baby Ruth bars. From what I understand, the same situation is happening at Hy-Vee, at least in the store in northwest Davenport, according to what my daughter said. She mentioned that Hershey's or M&M Mars products dominate the selection.

And so began the great razor blade potato panic of 2025.

We have quite a few homes give full sized bars.

I'm not jumping into that arms race. We put out snacks. Chips. Granola stuff. Rice Crispy treats

Always cleaned out.

No chance I'm putting a goddam weapon (ie potato) out there. Don't need one coming through my window with a note tied to it.

I bet my parents still have an 80's Xray of my Halloween candy.

We usually hand out
The last few years we've given out little toys like super bounce balls, sticky hand slippers, flashing rings, whistles, Halloween themed erasers, etc. Kids love them. Plus we don't have to worry about peanut or other allergies.

I also get a kick out of hearing our whistles throughout the neighborhood all night long.
We'll usually have two bowls to pick from.
Bowl 1: candy bars - some with peanuts, some not
Bowl 2: toys and non-peanut candy (suckers, starburst, skittles, etc). Sometimes we'll throw in fruit snacks or snack bags of graham cracker treats.

I've had several parents comment about how much they appreciate having peanut free options for their kids.
