Cyclone FB players - what could have been

I loved Jarvis West. I thought he had a big future in the NFL as a Darren Sproles type of guy.

I thought Ernst Brun was the next Alge Crumpler.

I had high hopes for Aaron Wimberly.

My era was 2011-2014, so maybe I had rose colored glasses in an otherwise underwhelming time in ISU football.

Tracy Henderson in the early 80's was maybe the top receiver in the Big 8. Thinking at one time was ISU's all time leading receiver and did it basically 2 years. He was kicked off the team for his senior year, I think.
I didn't remember he got kicked off the team, or I might have mentioned him as well. I still think -- even with the WRs we've put in the NFL -- he was one of the best to ever play the position here. He also played at a time we were so bad it might not have made a huge difference.

I've got three.

Sam Richardson- Still the best HS QB tape that has come into ISU. Unfortunately his coaching staff was garbage and he got it all beat out of him. He could have been a really special player.

Quenton Bundrage- Same era. A piss poor environment lead to him just not ever getting there. He had as complete of a set of skills as anyone we've had and I'm including the recent glut of WRs we've put out.

Jacob Park- He was the best thrower of the football we've ever had. Just insane arm talent and I'm not just talking about strength. Just a raw understanding of how to throw a football to everywhere on the field. It's just too bad he didn't have a brain.

Edit: More

Jacob Dunning- Started as a RS freshman and was really good then popped his Achilles and didn't play again.

Daniel Burton - Same class same trajectory, same end. Gave it up after his junior season because of injuries.

TJ Mutcherson/Jared Brackens- Very gifted. Very not good decision makers. Brackens would have been on the front end of hybrid space players and could have been a weapon if he had his head screwed on right.

I'm not going through any more recruiting classes. 2011 and 2012 were enough. There were some really good players in there that never got to where they should have.

When I was a kid, ISU was abysmal. Around 5th or 6th grade my friends and I got to thinking that because we played at recess we could probably beat ISU. We legitimately thought we had a shot. So in a way maybe I should be on the list.

You might not be too far off. Remember when Walden sent a JV squad to Simpson (?) and lost 69-0?

I would have to go with Jerry Moses as well. He was to Iowa high school football what Dan Gable was to high school wrestling. Moses might have been even more dominant. I don't know what happened to him at ISU such as was he just hurt a lot or did he turn out to be a step to slow?
There is no question Jerry Moses is #1 for this list and Chris Boskey is #2.

Jerry suffered a major knee injury during his SOPH season IIRC (FR were ineligible back then) and medical technology back then prevented him from getting back to anywhere close to 100% of what he was. He was, by multiple accounts, the #1 HS recruit in the country out of East Waterloo. It's too bad there is no YouTube video of him from his HS playing days. I have tried to search but unable to find anything so far.

Mike Stensrud is ISU's best ever DT and before he got his knee injured, Chris Boskey was on track as a true FR to be even better than Stensrud and a 1st Team AA.

Boskey getting injured is one of my earliest memories as a Cyclone fan. I remember someone near us saying,"Uh-oh, is that Boskey?" The air went out of the stadium.

If we were to do MBB...you'd have to exclude all of the dudes who signed and never made it to campus or were off the team before the season: Ernest Brown, Jerome Harper, CJ Bruton, Ivan Chiriov...too many to count.

For me, I'd have to say Craig Brackins. Highest-rated recruit we've ever had, but was a horrible fit with McDermott who tried to turn him into a traditional big when his skillset was clearly more Kevin Durant.

We needed Ivan Chieriev, everyone did

Bruton was a heart-breaker. Would have been legal today. Gerrod Henderson also comes to mind and, of course, the old story about Glen Rice committing to ISU and spurning us on signing day.

Didn't Lee Love light it up in a pre season scrimmage before being ineligible or was it Anthony Lloyd?

I have run into Tracy from time to time. Despite all of that he is still a Cyclone and will chat up anyone wearing Cyclone gear.

We have a deep tight end position but DeShawn Hanika definitely passes the eye test seeing him resurface for Kansas this year, as he did when he was at ISU that year we struggled as a team.
I think I just saw an article that he had another season ending injury so his college career is likely done.

Yup...

Not sure if it was mentioned already, but Mike Warren. 1,300 yard rusher in 2015 as a sophomore. But each year had less and less productivity and finished with 105 yards his senior year. But he seemed like a great teammate even with his diminished role.

Think the guy that replaced him had more to do with it than Mike himself.

About a decade ago I got to meet him as he was umping the co-rec D league softball league I was in. Enjoyed chatting with him about Iowa State. He didn't seem to hold I'll will
