I was thinking back recently about Bo Williams (RIP) that had big time hype and had a long run against A&M. He fizzled out quickly.

Who are some Cyclone FB players that you thought were going to be stars but didn't pan out for whatever reason (injuries, grades, bad teams, etc.)

A few that came to mind:
Sedrick Johnson: big time recruit that never panned out and transferred.
Sam Richardson (QB): had a breakout game against KU, but struggled due to O-line.
Jason Scales: highly touted coming out of high school, but struggled with injuries
Jason Berryman (RIP): couldn't stay out of trouble.

Any others that I'm missing or before my time? (I was at ISU from 04-08)

Scales was the first one i remember being excited for. JJ Bass was another one

More recently, Joe Scates.

Also, I was hardcore drinking the JJ Kohl Kool-Aid at one point, but boy that didnt pan out worth a darn. Program is much better off with RB anyways so it worked out

He had struggle with injuries, probably more significant than O-line problem. (Unless the suggestion is line play had effect on the injury risk.)
Think it was more on the o line. He was really good if he could get the time to make a play but I think was on the run a lot because we didn’t have squat for an o line.

This was way back (2003 I believe). Iowa State received a verbal commitment from a Florida HS safety named Brandon Owens, which would have been the first 5 Star recruit (by one service) for Iowa State. He eventually decommitted and signed with Minnesota. Would have been the same class as Berryman, Blythe, Meyer, DeAndre Jackson.

For the old timers, it's Jerry Moses. It's not even close. He was considered one of the best Iowa athletes ever, along with Nile Kinnick, gary Thompson, Dan Gable, and Bob Feller. His NIL today would be millions.

Put it this way.

Tony Dorsett played RB for Johnny Majors at Pitt, won a title, Heisman, everything. Went on to the NFL and was ROY, all pro, Super Bowl champ. CFB Hall of Fame. NFL Hall of Fame.

Majors said Moses was better.

I wrote about this very topic for WRNL wayyyyy back in the day. My three choices were Jerry Moses, Chris Boskey, and ... (surprise!) Jack Trice.

Jason Scales fizzling out was a huge surprise for me. Probably biased because I played against him, but him and Jeff Horner seemed like the can’t miss Iowa college prospects from my time in high school.

The knee injuries surely contributed, but I also thought the S and C team put some bad weight on him as well. He looked like a fullback with none of his former burst by the time he was done at ISU.

Looking back, David Irving not working out at ISU is still a head scratcher, considering how long he stuck in the NFL.

Quenton Bundrage had a great sophomore year, only to get hurt the first game of his junior year. His senior year was ok but I thought he was gonna be an NFL guy prior to the injury. Probably didn't help the the offense wasn't great during his time here.

He had a great Iowa State career but I thought for sure EJ Bibbs would be a TE in the NFL for a long time. Probably didn't help that he started his career with the Browns.
