Cyclone FB players - what could have been

Tracy Henderson in the early 80's was maybe the top receiver in the Big 8. Thinking at one time was ISU's all time leading receiver and did it basically 2 years. He was kicked off the team for his senior year, I think.

When you think things are bad now, read that Criner article. What a mess and thank God for Campbell. AD seemed to be a complete wreck at thst time.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Mike Warren yet. Thought he would get even better every year after rushing for 1,000 yards as a freshman then quickly was phased out when Campbell got here.
Well, some dude named David Montgomery may have had something to do with that after his injury.

He had struggle with injuries, probably more significant than O-line problem. (Unless the suggestion is line play had effect on the injury risk.)
Richardson was pretty quick until he got it beat out of him.

Tyson Smith was a monster LB recruit who got pressed into playing DE because we had no talent there. He did fine but probably would have been an NFL guy if they could have kept him at LB.

This was my era at ISU. I knew every one of those players mentioned in those articles. IMO, Criner was the worst thing that ever happened to ISU football. His son was the biggest dickhead I have ever met and was on scholarship. Steroids were a big deal back then and I'm sure "roid rage" had something to do with all the trouble that group got into.

Looking at top recruits each class in the CMC era, easy to see 2020 and 2022 were the biggest flops which is why his worst season was 2022.

For the old timers, it's Jerry Moses. It's not even close. He was considered one of the best Iowa athletes ever, along with Nile Kinnick, gary Thompson, Dan Gable, and Bob Feller. His NIL today would be millions.

Put it this way.

Tony Dorsett played RB for Johnny Majors at Pitt, won a title, Heisman, everything. Went on to the NFL and was ROY, all pro, Super Bowl champ. CFB Hall of Fame. NFL Hall of Fame.

Majors said Moses was better.

I wrote about this very topic for WRNL wayyyyy back in the day. My three choices were Jerry Moses, Chris Boskey, and ... (surprise!) Jack Trice.
Jerry and his wife were in charge of the before school care thing my son oldest went to in kindergarten. He was always throwing a ball to those kids and still running around with them in that gym. He was a great human no matter how his football career turned out.
