Jontez Williams out for the year

It 100% is just bad luck. You really can’t control the type of season ending injuries we’ve seen in any way.
I’m sure some people are going to feel differently, but if this happened on that friendly fire hit at the end of the Arizona game. It’s not just bad luck.

If myself and many, many other uneducated fans are begging us to pull our starters at the end of that game, this could have been prevented

It’s a bummer cause our secondary was elite. Our safeties are still really good. And Bell is a stud, but the other CB spot is going to be an issue.

Gutted for Williams and Cooper. I really thought they were sure fire NFL draft picks in the near future
Agreed. Hopefully they will both be back next year and be ready for the draft.

I would love to know why he was even in the game during garbage time. Particularly after you already lost one of your best DBs earlier in the week. It’s just inexcusable and was totally avoidable. This one has to fall squarely on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

What would you be saying if he got hurt in the first quarter? Should have been a back up in for that specific play/series?

Or any other point for that matter?

I simply don't understand why anyone uses this narrative time and time again.

It's really weird.
Agreed. It is water under the bridge at this point. It sssssuccks and we may approach it differently in the future. Starting DBs are often left in late, when others have been subbed out as a safety valve.

This. The game was well in hand, and there are already injury concerns at the position.

I get it - no staff is perfect and it’s tough in real time. It’s still hard to look past how glaringly stupid it was to have some of the most important starters on the field - regardless of position - at that point of the game. I’m sure I wasn’t alone yelling at the tv about starters still being in even before the injury happened.

If you’re paying me $3-4 mill per year, and with designs on reaching the postseason, there’s no rationalizing this f*ck up. It’s not acceptable. Campbell didn’t have a good reason in the post-game either.

That’s a different conversation though. The original post was insinuating that we have some flaw in training/injury management.

You want to complain about starters playing late, that’s another topic entirely.

I can assure you that you weren’t the only one. I got a funny look from someone in the row in front of me when I asked why the starters were still in the game.

I mean this possibly cost Iowa State its best ever shot at a Big 12 championship. It just cannot happen

I mean, you're right of course that it could literally happen on any play. If not the end of this game then it could have happened in the first quarter of the next game.

But that just broadens out the point not to necessarily blame it on him playing in a specific quarter and why its important to minimize the number of plays for key players whenever possible as each time the ball is snapped every player has a certain % of risk. Over time, an increased number of plays will result in an increased number of injuries.

(Also, on a less related note, why it can be an advantage for teams in easier conferences that blow through weak competition where they can pull players more regularly, and thus their odds are greater that they enter the postseason with fewer injuries)
