AP Poll and the morons who get to decide

The AP will never get rid of the poll, but why does it have to come out on Sunday? Why not move it back to Monday? Give the writers a vote deadline of Mondays at 12PM EST. At least that way these writers that are on a team beat at least get enough time to review the games.

Who decides the voters on the AP poll?
I'm legit curious to know this, as well.

I mean, can I somehow get my foot in the door? I'd (like to think, anyway) that I could much more objective than many of the current folks who are allowed to vote. This woman used as an obvious example.

I don't want to have to use TikTok, Twitter, or any other social media though, so I'm probably already ineligible due to my lack of social media presence/clicks.. :)

Who decides the voters on the AP poll?

From a Mike Hlas ballot column after Week 1:

Anyhow, I’m the Iowa representative on Associated Press’ college football poll in 2025. This happened last week. AP realized last year’s Iowa rep, John Steppe, was no longer in Iowa. John took a job in his Wisconsin home state this summer, and so no one from Iowa voted in AP’s preseason poll.

So AP contacted me, asking if I’d do it. I hesitated. For one thing, it requires a certain amount of paying attention. For another, the ballots get people agitated. Especially my ballots, as the lunatics — I mean, fans — who took my votes on last winter’s AP men’s basketball Top 25 extremely seriously.

The BCS ranking was the best ranking we ever had or will have. It was incredible, just flawed that it fed a two team playoff when typically 3-5 teams were worthy of the NC game discussion.

Sure that Harris poll had a few idiots but it was like 1000 people vs 13 mostly Big Ten stooges on the current committee. Then other 1/3 was coaches poll. Then final 1/3 was computer average but it only took into account this year's data and they threw out high/low.

There's absolutely no reason to have the committee, we could keep current formula and use a vastly superior ranking like that to select at large and seed teams.

BCS formula feeding an 8 team playoff would work perfectly in 100% of all college football seasons. The lowest ranked team with a NC worthy resume entering post season is usually 3 but a few years has been 4th or 5th.

The committee is the finger on the scale

Holy cow this person is clueless. Her ballot is an abomination and her explanation only furthers the need to either actually vet these pollsters or get rid of it entirely.

I actually don’t think her ballot is that horrendous. There are only three teams I think way out of wack. Baylor shouldn’t be ranked and that is moronic. Florida should be much lower and USF should be in there. It is bad and all but missing that USF Florida result is far from egregious. They have to be a lot worse to raise my ire.

2024 8-team playoff using BCS formula (straight seeding, actual CFP champion in bold):

Indiana v Oregon
Ohio State v Texas

Penn State v Notre Dame
Tennessee v Georgia

2023:

Oregon v Michigan
Alabama v Texas

Georgia v Florida State
Ohio State v Washington

2022:

Kansas State v Georgia
Alabama v TCU

Tennessee v Ohio State
Penn State v Michigan

Tell me that system wouldn’t print money.

I think it’s more of her response that is getting most of the backlash.

Her linkedin says she specializes in women’s BBall, Gymnastics and softball. It also says she is a freelance writer. Just curious, when did AP allow Freelancers be AP voters? Maybe it’s an outdated LinkedIn.

I saw the video first and then went to her ballot expecting it to be awful. It wasn’t that egregious. The big issue was still having Florida ranked (did she move them up?) and not ranking USF. Honestly, I don’t think she realized USF won that game.

She should have just come out and said she made a mistake and thought Florida won and it will be fixed for next week. I think that would have played better than her actual response.
