Would You Give Sage A Chance?

Texas Tech gave Kliff Kingsbury a chance and he's not been a huge winner yet, but he's getting some great recruits. Pair Sage with great d-coordinator (like we did when we brought Bobby Lutz in with Fred) and make them a force to be reckoned with...
I would have the same fear in the back of my mind that I had when Fred got hired. If he fails, you'd feel bad firing the guy you loved as a player.
No, not without any coaching experience whatsoever. I'd be thrilled to bring him in if he had even a modicum of experience as a coach, scout, executive, whatever to supplement his playing experience.

I'm loyal and passionate about ISU. Graduated from there to boot. Also was a benchwarmer in high school for three years. Does that qualify me to be head coach?
I love Sage. I want him to be a part of the program in some way, just not sure that HC is the place for him right now.

Sage was awesome for ISU. Great QB, got ISU their first bowl win. But the guy has no coaching experience at any level, and you want to give him one of the toughest coaching jobs in the country. That is not setting someone up for success.
Besides, there is one coach out there with ties to ISU who just helped OSU win a National Championship and is setting off on his first head coaching gig. If Tom Herman has any level of success at Houston next year and Paul Rhoads continues the downward spiral, Jamie Pollard better drive a dump truck full of money up to his house and give him the keys to the program.
Hell, even if you want to go down the former player route, Austin Flynn is coaching right down the road at Grand View. He actually HAS assistant coaching experience. Even though it still makes no sense, it makes WAY more sense to hire Austin as the next coach then Sage.

While he would be a fan favorite hire. I don't think you could expect the kind of success that ISU has gotten with The Mayor. That hire was a once in a lifetime gamble that paid off in diamonds. Would Sage do well here? Not sure. It would depend on if he had the salary available to go after really outstanding assistants who could help him through the learning curve of running a major college football program.
Need a guy (a lady if she's available) who is an even keeled strategist, manager and builder. I don't want a robot, but we've learned passion alone doesn't get it done. ISU needs someone who has the gray matter to to think through and act on a list of requirements to take this program out of its 100 year rut. The gray matter part includes the ability to be different and bold in hiring, scheme and player utilization. Analytics and out of the box thinking are absolute musts, we just can't keep trying to do what others are doing. As others have suggested in other threads, we need our version of "moneyball". If Sage could bring those kind of management skills, give him a look. However, I have to think there are a few guys at below P5 level (including Div 2 and 3) who deserve a look before someone with no coaching experience.
This. Kingsbury proved himself as OC at a Power 5 school.
Again, if Sage wants to be a head coach I'm betting he could easy get a QB coach job and work his way up. Like everyone else does.
Sage is a good Cyclone, a good follow on Twitter, pretty good as an analyst in his one chance. But a coach at the D1 level? He's not doing anything now that would prepare him.

If he has the knowledge and attributes Fred does than yeah absolutly. Fred is a very smart guy and had a detailed vision that Jamie bought into. That kind of person is extremely rare and to buy I to it with no proof is very risky. a good manager can recognize talent. Given Jamie hired McDermott and chizik I think he just got lucky with fred.
Tell me who the other coaching candidates are first. If they are the running backs coach at Central Michigan, the defensive coordinator at South Alabama, and the cornerbacks coach at Fresno State then yes. I'd like to get someone with head coaching experience though. I can't imagine how awful it would get here if he failed though.
Paul Rhoads was the guy because he checked off all the boxes mentioned here, plus he had 20+ years of relevant NCAA coaching experience. He hasn't exactly shined through.
Sage doesn't even coach PeeWee football. And I've never even heard him say that coaching was something he wanted to do.
