Was curious after the conversation today about being surprised the game isn’t a sellout:

Since the S End zone was bowled in, there have been 15 sellouts. All have occurred in odd numbered years when we play Iowa at home. If the Baylor game were to sell out it’d be the first in an even numbered year in at least 10 years. When you look at the attendance trends over the years, it appears that odd numbered years can generally have a 3000-4000 per game dip in attendance. I’ve noticed secondary market tickets are going for quite a bit more this year even though attendance is down. I assume you have a group of people who are buying season tix for the Iowa game in odd numbered years then dumping the rest of the season on the secondary market.

Probably is something to personal financials playing a part for some attending or not if you can pick up cheap tickets on the secondary market or not. At the end of the day it’s not an excuse but a reality that cost is a factor and that this year isn’t an anomaly from prior trends. You’d hope that the team’s success will push those in the fence to fill the Jack in October and I bet it will be close to full on Saturday.

There isn’t an unlimited supply of fan money. Donate to the school, donate to WeWill, buy season tickets, buy parking passes, buy food/drinks for tailgating…it all adds up to a huge financial commitment by fans. Add in that sitting at home and watching games on TV is much easier.

I’d argue that the live experience of college football is so bad now (outside of the actual game) due to the number of TV breaks, it’s a contributor too.

But even without technical sellouts, Iowa State is better than most.

I think CW pretty much nailed it. It also didn’t help losing to two G5 teams last season.

That has nothing to do with not selling out this game yet. It might have something to do with season ticket sales.

When you factor in the Cyclone Club donation, tickets, parking passes, and concessions, my wife and I are easily spending $500 per home game. And all that so we can tailgate in hot weather, watch a 4 hour game in very uncomfortable seats, and come home pretty exhausted after 12 hours.

I could never even imagine a home football game without me sitting in the stadium, but I have to admit it's starting to creep into my mind more and more.

It'll be a sellout if there's only a few hundred tickets left. And we'll get additional sellouts if the team continues to win.

Agree. We still have one of the top fanbases in the entire country... not even a question.

But it is getting extremely difficult for fans to continue to support at these levels. The greed is destroying everything.

I think you have a great point in the value of the in person experience versus the TV experience. With all the stoppages and commercials, I love jumping over to my 4 screen view to check in on other games. My couch is infinitely more comfortable than a stadium bleacher. My food and drinks and bathroom are all readily accessible, and I can hit them up with no lines so I don't miss a second of the game. That is hard to compete with.

All of this is sort of true.

But---just like basketball---nothing can replace the feeling of being at a game.

Yeah I am considering being done with football. After donation to get a decent seat and parking pass + a ticket, I am into > $500 per home game. A season pass at coldwater is 3 football weekends.

It's just getting too expensive to be worth it anymore.

Additional season ticket sales wouldn’t count towards selling this game out? I’m lost.

Yeah but can you pump up the burrito from the couch? Or smile for the delta dental cam?

Yeah, more season ticket sales makes it easier to sell out because it lowers the number of single game ticket sales needed to hit a sellout even if those season ticketholders don't attend a game. Of course, this goes the other way a bit when those ticketholders put them up for sale.

While I think Williams was spot on, what fans here think we are in the “country club?” I don’t know any. all the fans I interact with are fully aware ISU is a public course athletic program. We don’t like it, but we are well aware.
