Chris Williams and Brent Blum dive into No. 3 Iowa State’s OT loss to Arizona and the “foul or defend” debate. Looking ahead to the Kansas State matchup with Tang’s return to Hilton. All this and more presented by Mechdyne.

Enjoy!

@brentblum On the W&B podcast and the postgame show, you didn't seem nearly as upset as I would have expected. I know that few of us feel a loss as badly as you. Perhaps you just channeled most of your frustration about the Arizona game right into your desire to destroy Tang and K-State. I love all the energy and creativity you bring for the game on Saturday.

Thanks for listening as always! Honestly the result sucked, but I know this team is as good as anyone so I’m enjoying the ride. We will remember this group for a long time so I’m fired up for what’s ahead more than anything!

I'm more of a morning person so I was asleep not long after tipoff. I wasn't expecting to win anyways (conference road games are always tough). Not watching it live actually helped me cope. If I had watched it live, I would have been crushed.

I don’t have anything to add besides the fact that the name Jonathan Garibay still makes my blood boil every time I hear it

Mrs. Velo and I watched the second half in bed. She has gotten on me for years when I am loud watching Cyclone sports and the kids are in bed. I had to shush her when she full out screamed when that prayer shot went in.

So (compared to other teams) we are great inside the paint except for within 2 feet of the basket. Also great from deep in the middle of the court and right side of the court. Stop shooting 3s from the left wing and baseline.

I work in design and dabble in data vis. This is a confusing graphic.

This is displaying ball screens — so this is the location that the ball screen happens that leads to points? Red being good, blue being bad? See also, white?

But also depicting Conference play vs Big12 avg? — I'm not getting what this chart is putting out.

Feels like it's missing some context or mislabeled.

Everyone's list is their own list, but wild to me to have the Arizona game over the Craft Ohio State game in 2013. A buzzer beater after that charge call to end the season when a Sweet 16 berth was on the line in a blown up region? That will always be high on the list for me.

Definitely leaves much to interpretation, but here's how I took it:

It's showing us data for each Big12 team including results only from conference play. The color gradient is -.15 to +.15 average points per shot with the midpoint (0 - white) being the overall Big 12 average.

I doubt that ball screens are happening in the paint, so I interpret each mark is the location of the shot regardless of the location of the ball screen.

For ISU, it looks like we struggle with a true pick and roll and are better on a short roll or pick and pop overall. Also, as someone else called out, we apparently should never kick it off to the left wing on ball screen action!

I love our team too, Brent, but the even suckier result today shows that something is amiss. Your excitement for what's ahead seems like sunshine pumping to me.

Fair enough. I believe in this staff and players. It’s February 1st. Getting Milan back will help a lot, not to mention each team goes through its ups and downs.
