Just let it wash over you like a tranquil sea of humor for a week or too - you didn't like beer the first time you tried it either did you?
That may be true for many of the people here, but in the post wingback quoted, cyfan referenced Letterman of the 80s. If he's old enough to remember that, he's old enough to remember Carson. That's all wingback was responding to.
I loved both episoids so far. I'm starting to record them and actually want to watch them the next day.... I never did that with Leno or Letterman unless there was a guest that I was dying to see.

I think Letterman has gotten too political, very one sided, and it shows when he has particular guests on. Leno just had fun with the political side, tended to give both sides equal ribbing without it sounding personal. IMO

The thing I find humorous is Letterman ripping Conan all week. He might want to check that Leno consistently had a higher viewership than he did, and Conan is destroying him this week. And if last night's show is any indication of how Conan's 15+-year run is going to be, Conan's going to OWN late nite (Julia Louise Dreyfuss "accepting a post-awarded" Academy Award last nite was brilliant)...
I wonder how many viewers, after hearing a Letterman dig on Conan, decided to flip the channel and see what all the fuss was about?
Heard a blurb on one of those Entertainment gossip shows that Letterman is in territory where Carson was at the end of his tenure, as far as the network goes. Some in CBS believe he has gone stale and want to move on. According to this guy, CBS is going to make a big push to snag viewers from the Leno/Conan transition. If it doesn't work over the next few months, the heat is going to turned up internally to part ways with Letterman and move on to something/someone else, or majorly shake things up on Letterman's show to try and move up in the ratings. Also, like Carson, Letterman is supposed to have a contract that is quite favorable to him, so it could get interesting.

Letterman used to be great. He used to be very similar to Conan. But now he is just a bitter old man, that has been way to political and just plain mean IMO. For a few years now, it seems he is simply just going through the motions.

when he brought out kareem, i was hoping kareem would be in on the year 3000 bit. the funniest thing i've ever seen on conan was mr.t doing the year 2000 bit and i was hoping this would be like that too.

I agree with this, and I used to be a huge Letterman fan. He's grumpy and looks distracted half the time.
I tend to agree with you guys, but I went to a Letterman taping last summer. When he was introduced before the show, he literally sprinted onto the stage. He was in really great spirits and appeared to be pumped to do the show. The odd thing was that as soon as the cameras started rolling, that enthusiasm didn't quite carry through to the actual show.
My guess is he won't be on the air much longer. A couple of years, tops. He's 62, he's got a ton of money, and he's newly married and has a young son. I would think he'd be ready to hang it up soon.
Year 3000 was great. Hopefully they'll carry over a few more old bits. Like Triumph, perhaps?

leno was a lot better than that other late night clown that always wears the white sox with a suit-letterman. i have never liked letterman. leno was good but noone will ever equal johnny carson and HERE COMES JOHNNY!! i think conan obrien will do very well and i am interested in what leno will do in his new slot.
Pearl Jam played the first night of Conan' Tonight Show. Dave gave his blessing. And if you didn't know yet, PJ never played on Leno. Hmmm wonder why......America's greatest long standing band never played on the Tonight Show til the rip off boy was gone? Enough said.
Saw Dave in NYC at the Late night show a couple of years ago when Paris Hilton just got out of jail...fun show and the crowd showed no mercy to her. Probably lucky her family didn't have a hotel in Gutenberg if you know what I mean...
Anyway, Dave is not as funny as he used to be and is a little pissy in his old age. Also, I am looking for things that are non-political at that time of night. Anyway, Dave on a bad night in my opinion is better than Conan on a good night...yawn!
Speaking of old age...if comedy was water, Conan couldn't hit it standing in a boat in the middle of a lake on a calm day. Just my opion of course...
