Why would anybody play BB at OU?

That picture was from a game on Sunday afternoon, November 23rd versus Northwestern State. A reported attendance of 10,000+. The play by play of the game shows that Cousins made a three at 15:39 left in the first half. That looks like what is on the game clock above the shot clock. Since this is right in the heart of the first half, I think their reported attendance may be WAY off.
You don't say? It's as if that number is reporting the tickets sold, not butts in seats. That's weird..

Went down to see the Clones there last year, paid $6.00 on stubhub to get in. The guy next to me said that he was embarrassed by the BB crowds but the reason was that to get points for season FB tix you have to buy BB tix. That's why they claim 10,000 with an empty arena, it's seats sold not turnstiles.
Wow, that is really interesting. That is a weird way to do it, but it sure boosts revenue.

Well that's a pretty dumb answer to the question.

ISU averaged 54,000+ fans (more than 3 other Big 12 teams and nearly as many as K-State) and the team was an awful 2-10. About 97% of capacity.

Oklahoma, who is the #15 ranked team, averages less than 10,000 per game.

But good comparison dude.

I posted that picture tongue in cheek. Obviously ISU has some of best fan support and has the percentage numbers to prove it. The picture was more of a jab at OP's original question of why anyone would play for OU as if poor attendance numbers was the one and only deciding factor in why someone would choose to play basketball there. Posting a picture of a half empty stadium during some crap non conference games doesn't show the entire scoop of the schools fan support nor should it raise any questions of why players have or would chose to attend said school.

I thought the same thing myself. I wonder what the scenario is...

MBB season ticket prices are jacked way up, but OU knows that the football fans will buy them just to get points for the FB season tickets...

Or, the MBB season ticket price is reasonable, but the interest is so low that the MBB season tickets have to be tied to the FB season tickets just to get them sold...

Most big programs have some type of point system in place where you get various amounts of points for buying tickets to other school sporting events. Sometimes you get more points per dollar spent by buying tickets that you don't plan on using rather than just getting the points for donating the money. I would get more points for buying something like KU women's volleyball tickets than for just donating that same amount of money. Might as well buy the tickets and give them away to someone that might use them once or twice.

Basketball has been an afterthought at UT for as long as I have been in Texas (20 years) and probably long before that. But it also seems to be losing popularity at OkSU and OU over the last 5-10 years, even during conference games. It certainly could be due to the OKC Thunder. Also, OkSU got good at FB, and Sean Sutton/Travis Ford haven't been doing that program any favors relative to the success that Eddie Sutton had.

Okie St kind of bums me out, that used to be a rowdy a place to play in the country.

The NBA arrival to OkC corresponded with pretty much the worst 3-4 year hoops stretch for OU in decades. I wish it was better but tt should be a lot better come conference play this year than it has since Blake Griffin left.

it'll never get back to the Sampson/Tubbs days unless we win a conference title and/or make consecutive deep runs in March

Ok, lets find a game where Oklahoma is in conference, has a good team, and is welcoming a top 10 team into their place.

STILL COMPLETELY EMPTY!!!. KSU, KU, ISU and WVU are the only teams in the Big 12 that put any basketball fans in the seats, the other schools turnout is just sad and pathetic, especially for high ranked big school teams like Oklahoma and Texas. Also, I don't buy that "we have pro teams argument", where the hell are all the students at?! Clear bandwagon fans, or one sport football hicks, only fill arenas for one or two big basketball games a year. Thats why I always root for KSU, KU, ISU, and WVU more than the others.

Basketball in the south has really taken a hit as far as fan interest level. In Texas, I'd say the number 2 collegiate sport is baseball and not basketball.

Glad that the southern schools in the Big 12 are still making it a priority though regardless of fan attendance.

Which is why I find it funny when they argue to have the B12 tourney in Oklahoma or Texas. Put up first or shut up.

I know they've talked about moving it but that would seriously be the stupidest thing possible.
