Why? Just why?

Going back to 2014 that's 5 straight losses in the Sweet Sixteen and we weren't particularly close to winning any of them.

At least getting there more often will increase the chances of winning one but the wait has become frustrating.

The UConn and Illinois games came down to the wire. 1-2 breaks and it could have been a different outcome. Not sure where the narrative of not being close comes from

My only beef with Otz is that I don't know how fundamentally sound Xs and Os he is. Yes he is a culture guy, yes he gets his players to buy in and seems to bring the right guys in to run his system, but I'm not sure what we're getting from him in critical in game moments. It seems like he leaves it up to his assistants which seems kind of lame. But that's my only beef with him.
IF you are like top 30 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, I think that is related to good X and O coaching.

How could you achieve this if your x and o stuff was poor I think it would be difficult but maybe I am missing something.

What do you mean he NEEDS TO get them further? This is Iowa State, not Duke, Kansas or North Carolina so getting this team to 3 Sweet 16s in 5 years is a smashing success for this program. Anything more than that is gravy not the expectation.

Just curious and I’m in agreement but how much success is NC KU or Kentucky having the last 4 years. This comment is for the morons

Some of you guys are so negative it's not even funny. Wipe your tears and build back better. It's incredible that we were able to win anything without JJ. We were too dependent on his size and skillset and we can't let that happen going forward. TJ will fill the gaps and the reality is new ones will arise but TJ will build on his success.

I had no idea who Josh was when he got here. I’m guessing not many did. TJ will find guys.

#2 seeds should get farther than the sweet 16.....statistically most of them do. iSU was favored to win even without Jefferson and instead got blown out.

If Jeff got hurt in Big 12 tourney they would not have been a 2 seed. They would have dropped to a 3 or 4.

Once he went down they were a 2 in name only.

I think this is what galls me the most - we're getting to the Sweet 16 but then we're usually not even competitive (for the whole game) even against similar caliber or worse teams.

I’m still super mad this morning. I just keep feeling such a let down. I mean this was gonna be our year…. Again
I have moved on. Once Jeff blew the ankle I honestly expected losing in the round of 32.

But I would try to tell myself they could somehow work a miracle. Did for 1 game, not for 2

Why does this happen every single time? First Niang, now Jefferson, and we are stuck not being able to advance to the elite 8 again. This one stings and it feels like we’re just trapped. I love Otz, but man, he needs to get us further than this because I don’t think us fans are satisfied with the same outcome every time. Sorry for the rant. I’m just bummed.

Edit: I’m well aware Otz wasn’t the coach when Niang got hurt in the tourney. Some people seem to think I think that.
You forgot Keaton and Kane.

The UConn game was definitely not as close as the final score suggests. They were in control the whole game and Monte hit a 3 with 1 second left to cut the final deficit to 5.

The Illinois game got closer in the second half than I admittedly remembered but they controlled the first half when the damage was done, and we couldn't get over the hump from there.

Deep breadth everyone. I am disappointed with last night’s outcome like everyone else. You have the right to feel frustrated. However, ISU still had a great season and went to the Sweet 16 without their best player on the floor.

TJ is one of the best coaches in the country and does more with less than anyone else. I only wish his resources were amongst the top twenty in the country. That would provide more depth and a greater margin for error or injuries.

Thanks for that reminder. I remember us getting behind and never catching up. I was wondering about that final score.

No Sweet 16 loss sucked as bad as the UCLA game in 97. Dominated the entire game (up by 16 in the 2nd half) only to lose against a much bigger and athletic team.

NCAA history spans way more than 4 years. These are blue blood programs with unlimited resources, the expectations are in a completely different galaxy than at Iowa State. Saying that T.J. has to get them past the Sweet 16 or else is not understanding the history of Iowa State basketball and that even to this day that they don't have the resources to compete with the elite of college basketball year in and year out.

Of course you hope for that rare magical run that goes beyond a Sweet 16 and, who knows, maybe that would have happened if Niang didn't go down in 2014 or Gilbert and a hampered Lipsey in 2025 or JJ this year but going beyond a Sweet 16 being a necessity for an Iowa State coach to keep his job should never be the expectation at Iowa State. If T.J. continues to make the NCAA tournament just about every year and caps out at some Sweet 16 appearances every other season roughly, he'll have a job here as long as he wants it.

They played without their best player and Tennessee, if we're being honest, was the more talented team. Getting blown out was a bad look no doubt but I don't think that reflects poorly on T.J., this was a team that overachieved without JJ and they ran out of gas and Momcilovic picked a bad time to have one of the worst games of his career.

6 points to UConn without Niang. 3 points to Illinois where we missed a lot of bunnies. That is not close?
