Why? Just why?

I think this is what galls me the most - we're getting to the Sweet 16 but then we're usually not even competitive (for the whole game) even against similar caliber or worse teams.
If we would have gone down on a buzzer beater like in the Big 12 tourney against Arizona against a great team that would have sucked but that's not what happened. Instead we get blown out by a fringe Top 25 team that didn't exactly play over their heads.....that is what I think is kind of puzzling is that we didn't put up much of a fight against a team that we are better than on paper.

Would have been nice to get back to the E8 for the first time in my adult life but my disappointment is softened somewhat by Jeffer saying he wasn't close to being able to play and would almost certainly have been out Sunday against Michigan too. Even if the basketball gods smiled upon us for once in my miserable existence of ISU fandom and we won another game yesterday against a P5 team without our best player, the ride was ending on Sunday regardless.
I’m 55 and have been waiting 44 years since listening to Pete and Eric before the Hornacek days. Also a Vikings fan so there’s that. When we break the injury curse and get to the Elite 8 or farther, I believe it will be with TJ.

I’m still super mad this morning. I just keep feeling such a let down. I mean this was gonna be our year…. Again

I think how one feels about this game right now probably comes down to when they accepted Jefferson wasn't playing.

If you believed he was out for the tourney the moment he went down, you've had a week to accept that we had a pretty hard ceiling without some way above average shooting performances and can even be happy we still managed to dominate Kentucky. If you allowed yourself to have hope that Jefferson would play, only last night did that acceptance process begin.

I was probably somewhere in between. I saw that shootaround video and thought the chances seemed unlikely.

Even without Jefferson we destroyed a Kentucky team that beat Tennessee twice in the regular season. I fully expected us to lose to Michigan but we should have had enough to beat Tennessee or at the very least have a competitive game with them..

I am afraid not everyone has the programmed mind from that special water you are drinking.

It informs you that every defeat is because we are just completely outgunned from a talent/athletic ability perspective every single time.

So if we lost to TN State that would have been because they had superior athletes not because we didn’t play to our potential?

No, if they lost to TSU it would be because they hit a bunch of 3s and ISU got impatient on both ends, etc.

If you watched last night and didn't think TN was more athletic including a presumed lottery pick and that didn't play a big part in the outcome you're an idiot.

Why don't you post when ISU is winning?

Without Jefferson we are probably like a 6-7 seed. Not sure how we were blown out. Probably was going to be a tough game but had no business getting manhandled. Tennessee didn't even play well.

The transitive property rarely works well in sports, especially when various matchups can really determine the outcome. Tennessee was, by most metrics, a much better team than Kentucky over the course of the season

Their top in the country offensive rebounding rate combined with us being down our best rebounder is a great recipe for the kind of lopsided rebounding stats that rarely give any team a win.

It's funny because 48 other schools in this tournament are having the same conversations... People need to realize everyone wants to make the elite 8 or better. It is hard to string together 6 wins in a row at a high level of competition. If we keep getting teams like this we will break that threshold.
That is not true at all, because 48 schools that have lost did not have a real chance to win the tournament. Half the schools were just happy to be in the tournament, their goal was to win a game, maybe two.
ISU had the ability to win the tournament, many people thought and stated as much. That is the difference, did you go further than what you thought and your talents says you should. Every Squawk fan in the world will be fine even if they lose today. They got to the 2nd weekend, and the won 3 games in the tournament. No one thinks they can actually win the whole thing, while ISU fans are upset we did not at least get to the elite 8.

Long term I don't even know that we'd be that high of a seed without Jefferson. Other than him, Momcilovic and Lipsey are the only guys you can really count on for consistent scoring, but then you have to wonder how much of that is set up by Jefferson's passing. Everyone else was incredibly streaky.

How did Tennessee even lose a game this year if they are as big of a matchup nightmare for everyone as you say? They must be the best #6 seed that ever walked the earth. We still had 2 big-time players including our senior PG and a really good supporting cast and they mopped the floor with us. I'm more disappointed in how bad we were manhandled more than just losing the game in general. I thought this program was in a better spot in terms of talent and depth honestly. And Im not sure Jefferson playing would have made much difference. We couldn't hit free throws, and frankly looked lost out there offensively.

Many people thought they were going to win the tourney before Jefferson went down.

Timeline matters here

The best example as I have stated before is Kenyon Murray and Cincinnati.

It's the exact same situation and they lost in the round of 32.

Once Jeff went down any game won after the opening round was a gift.

If people had same expectations of elite 8 after Jeff went down that's on them.

In sports there is a thing called a dead cat bounce. Team facing a major injury might rally to win a game or 2 or 3 but ultimately they will fall below what they were before the injury.

Sucks but it's true

Jefferson isn't exactly the ice in his veins clutch player either. He was due for a game where he dribbled the ball neck high and had 10 turnovers.

I looked this up for the hell of it

Florida beat Tennessee 91-67

Florida and Michigan are basically the same type of team!

I am putting a **** ton of $$ on Michigan Tomorrow, hoping to see Tennessee get rolled!

Was everyone down their best rebounder and an all-american player? Any game where the rebounding numbers get that lopsided is going to be highly likely to be lopsided in result as well.

And yeah, i'm sure you don't think it would have made much of a difference. Its pretty clear as soon as your favorite boy made the elite 8 you were actively hoping ISU wouldn't.

******* hell you are an insufferable and illiterate poster.

Stop ******* crying. JFC we were the #2 seed. So losing Jefferson makes us a .500 team? Because that's what ISU looked like last night. Next year is going to be rough if our depth and talent is as bad as you say it is. We were playing the 6 seed and got absolutely manhandled.

You keep saying "as you say it is" for things I never said. Typical

Just stop talking, you don’t know anything

In the past week I've read about how even Hoiberg isn't great at Xs and Os after they lost but the retroactive look on his time at ISU tends to paints him as the inventor of free flowing dunkaroo offense.
