Who's the Visitor this Weekend?

I'm going to make a prediction right now and I really hope I am wrong. My prediction is IF we sign this guy (and it looks like he is ours for the taking given the competition schools)...I don't think he will ever be a major contributor. Per my previous comment, he has to be a project.

I know we need some big bodies and I've never seen the big man play so it is only a guy feeling that I have.

if nothing else, he would be good for the intimadation factor.

plus if he can run up the court, and rebound i like him

There is no reason why he couldn't at least be a role player in 3 or 4 years. IF he came here, red-shirted next year, lost some weight, and improved his quickness, I could see him making steady improvement under GMac.

GMac is a big man expert and if he sees potential, I'm sure he will take a chance on this kid.

He has great size. I would doubt he would contribute much right away but give him a year with GMac and maybe lose a little weight and he could be that needed banger we need down low. I'm not too concerned about landing a a guy that HAS to have an immediate impact because we already have Jiri, Brackins, and Thompson at C/PF along with the Johnson boys who can play some 4 so if he could at least give us 5-10 minutes of good play a night his first year that's at least what Ross would have given us and this guy has a bigger body to go with it.

I tried to find more info on Nweke. All I could pull up (for free) was this posted on one of his high school opponent's website:

"Marshall's 6'10" post, Kem Nweke and 6'8" Jonathan Sloan went head to head in a great matchup of big men. Needless to say, Sloan got the better of the battle, outscoring Nweke 29 to 12. Unfortunately, Pearce was unable to win the closely fought game. Down the stretch Pearce did not get many of the calls, as Marshall finally pulled away. The Mustangs did a great job getting the ball inside to Sloan, who played with a bruised right hand."

That changes my look at this kid, getting outscored 29-12 by this kid...LINK.

hmm...maybe he wouldn't be much better than Marsden

Here is a note on HoopScoop.com from July 2006 (FREE INFO):

We also were intrigued with 6'9 Kem Nweke from Missouri City (Ft. Bend Marshall) TX, who is being recruited by Texas A&M, Miami-FL, Colorado, Navy, San Francisco, Colorado, and Wichita State. We're talking about a 6'9 wide body who doesn't get up and down the court very well, but has good hands, excellent post moves, and a huge upside.

Says he is HS...looks like a MAJOR work in progress given the unimpressive list of interested schools.

Definitely has size, but must be missing something in his game at this point or he would be off the board to a major school already IMO.

Frankly, I don't care about the other schools that are recruiting him. Wesley Johnson was not exactly heralded last year either. If GM is a good a big man coach as his reputation indicates, ISU could use a guy like this. ISU needs some 'aircraft carriers' in the post. Wouldn't mind getting another guard as well.

Hopefully Nweke was just having a bad game (it happens). A better judgement of his abilities would be to find his season/career stats.

Head to head matchup doesn't really tell you much. If Nweke was helping out on penetration, poor rotation could have led to Sloan having a field day. What was Nweke's shooting like...if he was 5-6 for 12 pts, thats a lot better than 6-23 for 12 pts. If Nweke was rebounding and playing good team defense that is good enough reason to get him in an ISU uniform.

Maybe Kem's team was more perimeter oriented. I have no idea!!

What were the center stats when we played Maric at Knebraska this year?

<----Not excited about handing him a scholarship. Feel free to blast me, but I don't think he sees the court any significant time if he comes here and I'm not just talking about year 1 and 2..I'm talking throughout his career.

I know we need big bodies, but I'd rather invest in finding a better prospect for 2008 than take a risk on an '07 leftover. Unless we are bringing in some size that can contribute immediately (i.e. JUCO or stud HS) then bank the scholly for '08.

again..HOPE I'm wrong IF we ink this guy.
