Douglas and Todd out of Minnesota is pretty good.

Been trying to find a bottle of Weller Special Reserve but haven't had any luck. It's supposed to be the same recipe as Pappy Van Winkle but not aged as long.

I thought the Weller Antique 107 was the same recipe, but I may be mistaken.

From what I've read Special Reserve, Special Reserve 12 yrs, and Antique 107 are all the same recipe. SR is aged 7 years which is why it's the cheapest. Antique 107 is aged at 107 proof which is apparently why it's so expensive.

I've heard rumors that the Weller's are Pappy that didnt meet their standards. So:
Old Rip would equal Antique 107
Pappy 12 would equal Weller 12.

I usually have a bottle of each on hand. I use special reserve as a mixer half the time because it has no character at all. Way too smooth. Antique 107 is my favorite by far. Weller 12 is too smooth for me too at 45%.

Special Reserve is delicious. I have a bottle in my cabinet at home that I save for special occasions.

This is kind of true. It's not that it didn't meet their standards, per-se, it's that the Pappy is specially selected barrels, usually where they were kept in the racks. Where the Wellers is just pulled from any of the barrels. It's all under the same tent from Buffalo Trace. But actual Buffalo Trace is a different mash bill all together.

Like many things in the world though, it really doesn't even mean that Pappy is that much better, it's more of a marketing scheme at this point.

In the mid 70s a guy in our house lived near Templeton and brought the bootleg Templeton Rye. It was incredible.
I get a couple handles a year from my uncle who grew up in the area. 10x better than the BV bottles it comes in and non bootleg version.

There hasn't been much around Iowa, at least the liquor stores I've visited. Allegedly, there was some Blanton's around a few weeks ago, but I didn't see any. I've heard about a few bottles of Stagg Jr recently, too. I don't know that there is a way to find out what's going out, though.

EC Barrel Proof was all over a few weeks ago (C920, I believe). I even saw some of the B520. I passed, and now it's all gone. Six months ago Col Taylor was everywhere, too. I even have one of the tubes sitting on my desk. Now you can't find it anywhere, either. I just picked up a bottle of High West "A Midwinter Night's Dram". It's an enjoyable whiskey. Now I just need some cold winter nights to drink it.

I bought 2 bottles of the B520 this year and wish I had bought more. It's stupid smooth at 63.6%. I've also been really impressed by some of the store pick knob, 1792 and regular Elijah. Store picks are the best bang for your buck IMO.

As I have aged, I have become a fan of Canadian varieties. Windsor is a good everyday whisky. Stepping it up from there, CC works, and when I want to really step up, I go with the Gibson's Finest.
